It's funny, I've heard so much about the "modern hi-fi" sound of MTDs that I figured I'd probably stick with my Fender (or even my Sadowsky) for my old-school R&B gig. It turns out that my MTD works fantastically on that gig. This bass is a lot more versatile than I would have guessed and I'm looking forward to making a first-hand comparison between the ash/wenge combo and the ash/ash combo. I'm also really curious about the difference between the ash/wenge and the tulipwood/wenge, though it might be a while before I get the opportunity to check that out for myself.
I play gigs like this with BOTH MTD's (fretless and fretted), with a big 10 piece R&B band, and I never get lost in the mix, and can blend in and out of the mix like a chameleon.
Totally agree.
Just depends I guess on how much of a stickler you want to be for a specific kind of tone, as opposed to just looking for a tone that is a little different but still gets the job done in spades. This is the way I feel about my MTD. I don't hesitate to use it in an R&B setting. It doesn't sound exactly like a P or a J, but it still works pretty darn well for that music (and a lot of other styles) despite that.![]()
Amen, brother!
The 'Hi Fi' sound is there, but that's not all the bass has. For me the Ash-Ash combo is more versatile, It can nail that 'Fender slap' tone with no problem.
I don't have any gigs right now, I only play in School, and there I only play Jazz Standards. and everybody loved the way my MTD sound, they also said the same thing about my previous Ash-Wenge MTD. And it's a breeze to get that sound.
My Marilyn is THE most versatile bass I have ever played - from Jaco to Familyman to Pattitucci to Cameron Hood, it's all in there somewhere, its just a question of ME getting it out of it.

Sorry about my English, I'm from Argentina
If you mean the black stripe, that is ebony, probably, for contrast.
Cheers,
Cameron
