The Official MTD USA Thread

It's funny, I've heard so much about the "modern hi-fi" sound of MTDs that I figured I'd probably stick with my Fender (or even my Sadowsky) for my old-school R&B gig. It turns out that my MTD works fantastically on that gig. This bass is a lot more versatile than I would have guessed and I'm looking forward to making a first-hand comparison between the ash/wenge combo and the ash/ash combo. I'm also really curious about the difference between the ash/wenge and the tulipwood/wenge, though it might be a while before I get the opportunity to check that out for myself.

I play gigs like this with BOTH MTD's (fretless and fretted), with a big 10 piece R&B band, and I never get lost in the mix, and can blend in and out of the mix like a chameleon.

Totally agree.

Just depends I guess on how much of a stickler you want to be for a specific kind of tone, as opposed to just looking for a tone that is a little different but still gets the job done in spades. This is the way I feel about my MTD. I don't hesitate to use it in an R&B setting. It doesn't sound exactly like a P or a J, but it still works pretty darn well for that music (and a lot of other styles) despite that. :)

Amen, brother!

The 'Hi Fi' sound is there, but that's not all the bass has. For me the Ash-Ash combo is more versatile, It can nail that 'Fender slap' tone with no problem.

I don't have any gigs right now, I only play in School, and there I only play Jazz Standards. and everybody loved the way my MTD sound, they also said the same thing about my previous Ash-Wenge MTD. And it's a breeze to get that sound.

My Marilyn is THE most versatile bass I have ever played - from Jaco to Familyman to Pattitucci to Cameron Hood, it's all in there somewhere, its just a question of ME getting it out of it.

hallo , the black wood which wood ist ?

:( Sorry about my English, I'm from Argentina

If you mean the black stripe, that is ebony, probably, for contrast.

Cheers,
Cameron

Be careful..:D
I said this to my self many times that I will not sell A bass, B bass or C bass, but I end up selling them..
but if you ever going to sell, let me know...cause I live near you...:D

I said that a couple of times too... But I guess after owning and trying almost every bass (except for all those custom thing that pops up everyday), for me this is it, at least for now... ;)

Here's some walnut happiness from last Friday's trio gig. Outdoor casual at a great spot in San Jose (Dolce Hayes Mansion), with a bit of ambient noise in the background (sorry about that...we were playing for a banker's conference...if it was a librarian's conference, maybe they would've been more quiet :D). Anyway - 635, flat & centered > Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0, flat & centered, except pre-gain @ 1 o'clock > Aguilar GS112, tweeter @ 9 o'clock. Captured w/ my now-old-school M-Audio Microtrack 24/96. Recorded @ 24/96 (duh), normalized in Audacity and exported @ 320kbps mp3.

Nice!!!

It's funny, today I played 'Stolen Moments' too ('original' version), also with an Aguilar Amp, the AG500SC with the GS212, I choose a different sound than yours. I pan the Pickups a bit toward the bridge, boost the low halfway, and cut the treble halfway, mid at center, Amps set flat. And it's a joy to my ears :D

And my teacher made me play the melody for 'Don't Get Arround Much Anymore' (Duke Ellington) throughout the whole song, with the Bass still set like above, this MTD has the 'horn like' tone like no other, it's perfect for soloing on a Jazz tune. :hyper:

Walnut MTDs Rules !!!! :hiding:

That DOES look amazing. Looks like some kind of a spalting type discoloration on a quilted maple top, but I have to admit, I haven't seen that kind of discoloration before on maple, so I'm not sure if that's officially a spalt or not. Do you have the original letter from Mike on that bass? That usually says what the woods are. Otherwise, a quick email with the S/N could get that letter re-gen'd for you as well. Kind of a nice to have.
