that is SO chocolatey I think I'm entering a diabetic coma just by looking at that. That's ridiculous! So it's a stained ash body, topped with burled walnut, and a wenge neck topped with ? Is it stained at all (probably not). That is truly incredible, and once in a lifetime unique.

For those, like myself, now in dire need...

Sorry Cameron! ;) You're right about the combo, and the fingerboard is wenge. Wait a second - you said walnut? No - it's actually maple burl.

You're welcome. Of course, now I am in the "dealing with my loss" mode for selling #746, but I'll have to post some pics and comments about my new 635 shortly. It has been a crazy couple of weeks with work, family, and church gigs.

OK, #746 arrived to its new home today. Took it home and played it at lunch, I'd be playing it right now if the Fever and Liberty weren't playing. I love to watch Women's hoops. For those new to this thread it's the one on the right.

Where are my manners? Thanks, Bruno!

Here's some eye-candy -- this is the 635-24 that I recently purchased from fellow TB-er fLaT-fIfTh . . . ash neck with an insane BEM board, plus figured maple over ash body. The maple top is incredibly unique -- Mike's letter says it's "spalted", but that's the most unusually geometric spalt pattern I've ever seen.

Tone-wise, it's a big departure from my old 535 (maple+rosewood neck). The first thing I noticed was the punch from the ash neck -- it has a lower-mid (say, 200-450Hz) attack that really is fast and transparent. The same frequencies were there with maple+rosewood, but they definitely took longer to "blossom", and therefore sounded a bit rounder. The lower frequencies are just as strong my old 535, and the highs have a nice "ping" that I assume can be attributed to the maple fretboard.

Nice work, Mike!:)

That bass is incredible looking. The top is truly special on that one. Speaking of the top, though - that looks like maple burl to me. :hmm:

Careful with that gold hardware - it pits REALLY easily...wipe it down, often, or it will look absolutely ancient in about 2 years.

Gorgeous bass, man. Post some clips.

Cheers,
Cameron

The new one is maple top on ash body, maple board on ash neck. Our bass player (church) loves it to death.

No, the other new one. :)

The newEST one on the left is described above; the one I just received on the right is spalted maple on ash body, rosewood board on slightly glossed maple neck. The neck and board DO make a sonic difference but I need to plug them into a cranked amp so I can accurately describe it.

Ooh - that's a beaut, Vic. I take it that one had a wenge neck (explaining, perhaps, why you don't have it anymore)?
Nope, that's ebony. It had a maple neck. I VERY begrudgingly let that go to get the ash/walnut one I have now. VERY begrudgingly. That bass was amazing, but I had to make a choice.

In fact, that was the first one I ever bought. I ordered that one, and a similarly configured one except with the wenge neck, played both, sent the wenge necked one back.

Later on, after re-reading all the buzz about wenge and noting it is a very popular config, I gave it another shot. Bought a really great tulip/wenge 535 from someone used, but ultimately sent that one down the line too. The ash/walnut bass with the ash neck and maple board was what precipitated from the discussion I had with Mike regarding what I kept hoping to get from the wenge neck but was unable to.
