The Official MTD USA Thread

One of my band's videos's is currently a contender in a competition. Of course, it would be lovely if some of my fellow MTD lovers voted for it (:D) but the reason I'm posting it here is that the recording was made with my old ash/walnut/ash/maple 535. The bass was recorded direct and the track might be interesting for anyone who wants to hear that particular wood combo "in the mix". The growly nature of the bass' tone is especially evident towards the end of the track.

Un autre vote 5* pour mes chers cousins....

Nice video, me voted too!

Just got my first good news of this year – my new MTD 434-24 is almost done and will be present at the Namm Show 2013:

Woah! That looks AWESOME. I can't wait to see it there!

I don't own an MTD, but this thread certainly makes me want to empty out my bank account to get one.

The workmanship on this stuff is astounding.

I thought the same for years and was lucky enough to find a used 535 on TB for a nearly palatable price last year.

It was fairly expensive, but the bass is incredible and worth every penny. They look even better in person and the necks are incredible.

Very cool. After searching around for a while for a 434-24 and not finding one, I bit the bullet and ordered one. I'm being told it should be done this week.

It must be 434-24 month in Kingston, NY. :smug:

BTW, very nice looking bass. I'm not a huge fan of burl tops but that one works in every way.

Carlis, AWESOME looking 434/24 congrats! Leon, congrats as well...woo hoo for MTD's! I absolutely CAN NOT STOP playing mine!

For you 5 stringers out there, choice of nickel strings? Mine came with the MTD SS with a .135B. Gonna likley switch to nickels when these die and go down to a .130B. Just curious as to what y'all are strappin these bad boys with. Thx in advance!

I'm using SS but you could always try the MTD nickels. The only thing is that they're not the easiest strings to find. Maybe some DR Sunbeams?

If he wants something comparable to the MTD strings, it should be Nickel LoRiders, not SunBeams. The SunBeams have the round core like the HiBeams, and they'll be a little more scooped sounding and feel slinkier.

I have been experimenting lately with DR HiBeams, Sadowsky, Ernie Ball, Rotos, D'Addario, GHS and Fodera strings.

I now swear by Fodera nickels. They feel great, sound great, last longer than most and are surprisingly very competively priced. They are all i use now on my 535 and all other basses. Definitely worth a look!

Note: I am playing light strings for the first time in 25+ years (.040-.120) as well. I played a .130-.135 B for years. The .120 is great for me provided I don't downtuned below Ab.

I do dig the Fodera Nickels after playing one (on a Emperor Standard) last year @ Bass San Diego during a lil family vacation...Felt really good and sounded even better. K, it's between them and the DR LoRiders then...leaning towards the DR's just because they are easier to get for me locally and super curious as I have never played em. Thanks!

I've played both, and while the Fodera's are very nice strings, I think the DRs keep up with them pretty well.

I actually just took off the Lo-Riders that were on my Lull. I wasn't too into them. Not as flexible as the MTDs I'm used to. Having said that, the MTDs I just put on the Lull aren't working as well as they do on my MTDs and the Lull really doesn't like that tapered B. I'm going to slap on some Hi-Beams and see how those work out. I hate playing musical chairs with strings but some strings just work better on some basses than they do on others. :)
