Well, after a bit of thinning the herd, and one notable addition, I thought I'd update the current MTD collection pics.

I do miss the MTDs which have moved on, but I am VERY happy with these four. :cool:

Nice Basses!!! Is that a buckeye burl on your 535?

Just in case anyone's wondering about the 3-piece body MTD ala' Tobias on Bass San Diego's website, here'a what Mike has to say about the Bass:

That body was something we put together as an experiment to sed how it would go. It is pretty round and reminiscent of the AG5. It does not have the snappy high end but is round and smooth on the bottom end. We are making a few different ones to see how they work. The next one is a wenge center with zebra wings. Partly it is a reminder of the old Tobias basses.

One more reason to order a new MTD with different specs :hiding:

The bass on the left is Marilyn #3 (one of the first three chambered prototypes Mike made), and it has an alder body, blackened, water-cured redwood top, maple neck, and "blistered" ebony board with purpleheart dots and a purpleheart accent line under the top.

However, if you meant the bass on the right, that is actually an ebony top over a makore body, with a flamed ash/white wenge/wenge laminated neck and a birdseye maple board.

I love mtd's for quite some while. I got the chance to play two when I was visiting the states three years back. I played a 535 ash myrtle burl maple with Ebony board and a 535 mahogany myrtle burl maple rosewood neck n board. Both where extremly Nice playing and sounding mtd's.
Recently I saw a clip of Tim rawbiz, I don't know what kind of wood combo he has in these clips but that is just insane sounding.
does Anyone know what he uses on his 635?

I really want a 535 that gives me that kind of tone.
I am a p bass kinda guy so I naturally crave dark, warm and crunchy tones, a mtd would extend that but also give someting different ofcourse, which is good. AsI remember those mtd's gave me real pleasure and I really couldn't stop playing them they fitted my playing style better then most beautique basses I played before. so I thought I should hunt one down:) So its important to know what type I should search for, and was hoping the mtd community could prolly help me out:)

what would you recommend me to go for tho. I like the dark earthy sounding ones the best. I like growl, low mids, resonance, some fatness maybe some compression, but no super high Hi fi sappy highs.

Man, I would really recommend you talk to Mike about this... maybe also Glenn at Austin Bass Traders. There's been a lot going on with different woods since I last dug into these topics... woods I'm not familiar with.

But for the stuff that's fairly common/well-known, mahogany is known for good warmth and low mids. Alder is good for a classic type sound. For boards, maybe a genuine rosewood of some kind?

Anyway, strongly recommend you talk to the most up-to-date experts... Mike/Glenn are my top two go-tos for this kinda' thing.

I was in the same position as you just a week or so ago. I love the look of MTD basses, but wanted a less "hi-fi" sound. Looked into different woods (swamp ash, walnut body, etc...) and came to the realization that a Roscoe 5 would be my best bet. Just as awesome looking with the exact tone you are looking for. I put my deposit down a few days ago!

Yeah, my first thought was mahogany body with a rosewood board. But maybe pau ferro would be a better choice. I've played mahogany/pau ferro basses, and they sounded great. Mahogany/rosewood might be a bit too rounded up top. Depends on the rosewood used, probably.

Another great body wood choice would be makore. In fact, I'd be surprised if Mike didn't mention that as one of his preferred options.

Another possible fingerboard that might work would be wenge. A full-on wenge/wenge neck and fingerboard might take Brams away from the tone he is after, but one or the other (neck or fingerboard) might be an option.
