The Official MTD USA Thread

Ah ok... I see... In any case talk to Mike, and let US know what you came up with.. I'm curious at the outcone.

Mike said he can make me a MTD version of the bass. His woods are alder/bubinga with flame maple neck and rosewood FB. He said he can do an alder wood, and bubinga FB. I didn't order that combo because I don't want a copy of someone else's bass, I want my own tone. I am going with ash body/maple burl top, maple neck and a Rosewood board. Either Madagascar, amazon, or Florida rosewood.

On a side note...I had Mike set-up and fine tune my "new to me" 535-24 in mid June...and the B string is still as focused and tight as anything else I've played...it's pretty unbelievable

My only fear is that MTD's will be like a Lay's potato chip....

Very wise and my fav wood combo for sure!

I don't have a Tobias. A good friend of mine (the other bass player at my church) has one (#1560).

My workhorse MTD is the same wood combo (with a Madagascar rosewood fretboard). I love that bass. My latest Sadowsky, however, has an Amazon fretboard and it has one of the most incredible tones I've heard in a bass. Even acoustically it projects like no other bass I've played. Now, the fretboard might not be the reason for this but if I had to hedge my bets... So yeah, I might be tempted to go with the Amazon! :)

How would you describe amazon and Madagascar rosewood totally?

This Amazon rosewood would be Brazillian rosewood which is endangered, forbidden to ship... Brazillian rosewood is what I have on my real 62 p bass... That bass is insane... But all the woods in that era are different then used nowadays on fenders anyhow... The only thing I know comes close is the pino sig bass a very expensive CS fender.
But thats another story...
Tho I did some serious nosing around, but Madagascar rosewood is very very similar in grain and structure as the old Brazillian rosewood... Now Indian rosewood (which is used on every std fender bass and other basses) is very different it has a different grain pattern.. Mac rosewood would be the best rosewood, Brazillian (dalbergia negra) would be more or less the same... If you could even get it... Which I doubt...

Just received pic from dealer and love it....

I couldn't because I haven't had enough experience with both. But Amazon is not the same as Brazilian. Here's a description from the Sadowsky site: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

Don't fret (:smug:) too much over it though - either way you'll be good.

Ah... Your right... I never heard of Amazon rosewood tho... But I know Mac rosewood and Brazillian rosewood are very very similar in appearance an tone... If Mike has that stuff go with it iwearpumas

Has anyone ever had a hard time adjusting to a 35 inch scale?

Not at all. I played Warwicks for a few years (34") and had more trouble with those than anything else I'd ever played (because of the short upper horns and/or short bodies -depending on the model - the necks would feel really long). I think a lot of people get hung up over the whole 34" vs 35" than is generally necessary. They'll talk about scale length more than other aspects of the instrument's design which, in my opinion, often have a much greater impact on how it will play. I wouldn't worry about it.

Given iwearpumas questions regarding the alder/maple/maple/rosewood combo I'm posting a link to a recently recorded demo. The bass is my MTD 535 (the same wood combo as just mentioned) and the strings are dead MTD steels (I specifically wanted a dead-ish tone for the recording). All onboard EQ is flat and the song has yet to receive its final mix.
