The Official MTD USA Thread

Yep that's the one, and thanks! Actually, it was the figuring of the walnut that hooked me. And I have to give props to the folks at Bass Club Chicago, they were great to work with. It came with the Luminlay side dots, they actually work decently for when the stage lights go down.

The figuring on that walnut (and the colour) are gorgeous. What does the bass weigh?

sooo, i got my 635-24 some months ago and i love it so much i have another one comin' my way at the moment! This one will be 635-24 tulipwood body, all wenge neck, luminlay position markers and splittable nordstrand pickups. It will include the original barts too. Oh! I hear you on the walnut body. After I had mine setup correctly I was blown away (also has the ebony fingerboard). Awesome low-mids with great clarity.

Thanks! Yep, it's spalted maple over figured walnut. The top also has some light quilting in some spots. The fretboard is ebony, on a maple neck. Lot's of snap to the sound, and the walnut seems to give it some low mid warmth. I've never had a walnut bodied bass before (my last MTD was ash), and I'm really enjoying it so far

Just a quick shot of my babies... The black 635-24 arrived today! It had nordstrand dual blade pickups, and i really didnt like them so i just switched the original Bartolinis back :) much better, and the MTD-sound is there!

So okay! Heres a little better pictures of my two 635-24! I have to say that even tho they are same models, they sound different! Wenge one is more compressed and "dry" sounding to me, and its alot lighter! Ash one is warmer and mode "lively" sounding... Its hard to describe them with other words than: awesome :)

Upper one:
Wenge neck and FB
Tulipwood body
Flamed myrtle top

Great looking basses both of them. I have to say that my wenge MTDs have consistently been "warmer" sounding than the one ash-necked MTD I owned . Much fuller-sounding too. I do agree about the compression of wenge though, and my ash 535 was much "grindier" than any other MTD I've owned. Could be my ash 535 wasn't representative of most ash MTDs though. Anyway, enjoy your two beautiful babies!

Ever since my local MTD dealer sent me this photo, I've been debating about getting the bass. Seeing the Youtube video has pretty much clinched it.

I gather MTD owners are pretty passionate about Mike Tobias's basses. I've been close to a purchase in the past, almost getting a Pistachio 535 but it was sold by the time I made up my mind. I get it...you snooze, you loose.
