The Official MTD USA Thread

I had a number of discussions with Mike about the neck on my last 535 and ultimately went with a laminated neck of flamed ash and white wenge. He explained that the one-piece necks are a bit more open, and the laminations tend to add focus. Considering how open most of my MTDs have been, I thought the added focus would be a good idea, and boy, howdy, did it work out well!

Tom,

What is white wenge? I've never heard of that before. Is it some lighter variation of regular wenge, or is there more to it?

I think it is just a lighter variation of regular wenge. Pete Skjold had sent some to Mike for a fretless 535 that Mike built for Pete, and I knew that he had a little left over. I believe the middle strip is regular wenge.

I'm starting to think my build is behind schedule. 32 days from expected ship date and I haven't gotten pictures of the sanded body to finalize the finish. When I was at the shop there was a finished body hanging to dry and the completed bass was posted on Instagram 45 days later...

How is life with a headless MTD Super6?
Honestly, I can't get over how great it sounds and how easy it is to play. I was driving my son nuts on Christmas with it. Midrange growl for days and it's just super comfortable. I love all three of the MTDs I've received recently, but this one is really something special. If you're on the fence about headless, I truly believe that this one will make you a fan.

I know nothing about MTDs production schedule, if your bass is behind I would think it's because of NAMM. How long is the build time for MTD these days?

Varies by model. Saratogas take less time. I wouldn't say I'm upset about it, just fishing for other people's timelines. I have to assume they know about NAMM when they quote finish dates.

I'm just so antsy because I know I'm getting close, and this is the first one that I designed. The other three MTDs I've owned have all been in-stock at authorized dealers or used.

Mike was always pretty good about dates when it came to delivering the basses I ordered from him but the fact that his team is as small as it is, well, delays are going to occur from time to time. Part of the charm of going with a small, independent luthier. ;)

Be patient, MTD aren’t out to mess you around. I never once emailed them for an update during my build and it was all good and I couldn’t be happier. I get the feeling NAMM prep is a huge job.
