I just assumed that it's the MTD ABG, from the tone? The story I read from Bobby Vega is that he and Dave Holland got the first two that were built, a 34" scale and a 35" scale...

Would be really curious what Dave Holland is playing on that record for e. bass. It has none of the top end that I associate with MTD (which is why I don't play MTD). It sounds big and round in a spectacular way.

GHS Super Steels, by far. Either normal or contact core. And I favor lighter gauges for all, but that's a personal choice more than a recommendation.

I haven't seen it mentioned here, did you know Dave Holland is playing an MTD on his latest recording "Another Land"?
Not on all the tunes, some on upright, but here is a sample

That track has a bit of "Miles in the Sky" about it

D'Addario ProSteels (tapered) on my 635

GHS Super Steels, by far.

Still have the original set of MTD Steels on my 535 for over a year! That's not like me; I should be on my 3rd or 4th string change by now, but these still sound really good. I've been curious about the GHS Super Steels, so I'll probably try a set of those next.

I always liked the MTD steels (even through the transition of string maker that occurred after I started buying them). I still have several unused packs and I haven't had any reason to switch. I have DR Hi-Beams and Pure Blues on some of my other basses so I'll possibly give those a go on my 535s once I run out of the MTDs (simply because the DRs are easier to find).

Like I said, I still have a bunch of MTD strings so I most likely won’t be trying out the DRs anytime soon. Might get back to you in a few years though!

In the pic on the inside cover you can just make out the MTD headstock. It's a 5er and I'm betting it has a piezo as well as a humbucker. And I suspect he has those highs rolled off.
The tone comes through nicely on the solo in this one

I actually downloaded the cd after it was mentioned here. So cool to hear Dave playing electric!!!

+1 MTD brand SS rounds are my go-to, but my makore/ebony 535 is brighter than my other MTDs, and I find that DR Sunbeams are a better fit for that particular bass.

D'Addario NYXL. They're nickels (gasp!). Great clear punchy tone that lasts (not coated though). I have them on my 635.
