Hey all! I'm a long time lurker, but just bought a new Yamaha RBX374 bass this week, and took some pictures of my old bass before packing it away in a case for another decade or three. It's a Squier Katana I bought around 1990...which seems to be pretty oddball/rare. Googling says the Fender version was a lot nicer. Mine was mint when I bought it second hand from a local guitar shop in my home town, but it got some pretty significant finish damage on the back when someone (Mom, psychotic girlfriends, etc) crammed it together with my generic Stratocaster in a case or something. Otherwise, it's still in good shape. In the pics, the strap lugs are missing, because when I bought it I permanently attached the strap with a screw/washer setup...which has been in place since then (like 20+ years). I removed those last night and am replacing them with Schallers this week. Last night I removed the neck, so that it will fit in the $40 hard case I just got for it...since I don't plan on playing it anytime soon.

I think the Katana is a total fail when it comes to practicality...the neck weighs more than the body...and drops to the floor when you let it go. But I'm a total 80's dude, and think it is still a cool looking bass. Through the hard times, I've sold most everything I own except for the Katana. Since I got my new Yamaha, I can't put it down...it's the first time in 20+ years I have a bass (since I sold my P-Bass knockoff) that is comfortable to play.

FYI, I'm not a musician...I just plug in my bass/guitars in the rare times when I'm caught up on work and have a few Bud's or twelve down my pipe...and pretty much just pretend to play along with early Iron Maiden, and Primus when I'm in the mood for that "newfangled" music. I'm out of touch...but banging away..

If you ever want some more room I'll buy it off of you. Other than that She's beautiful! How much was she when you first bought it?

this pic is a few years old so I've got a few more toys since then, but I need to take some new pics. hard to see behind my chapman stick is my black Ibanez 6 string, the red fretless 5 I built, (Wilkinson bridge converter kit has 5th tuner on it) the custom in my lap I designed and had Lane Poor (who used to work for Alembic) make for me, the 6 to my left is a Tune, hand made in Japan (got it there), you can see my 2 mid 60's Hagstroms, the other things are assorted, there are only 2 normal 6 string guitars with standard tuning in that pic, every thing else is weird (citterns, bouzoukis, etc). I'll take some more proper pics at some point. maybe when I finish what I'm currently building.

Here's a cool pic my friend took for a photo class. Me and my #1: a 2002 Squier Affinity Precision with D'Addario Chromes. Bought it on a whim for $100 with some Christmas money, back in '08. It's been my go-to since then.

Thanks! I wish I hadn't let the paint get so banged up on the back, but it taught me a lesson: When I got my new Yamaha bass last week, I made sure to spend the money on a hard case for it!

I can't remember what I paid for it. Considering how broke I was back then...probably not very much.

hey now, I'm not quite that old yet! lol. not that that's old. I used to have more, for a long while I had 10-14 basses, but what's the point of having something if you don't use it? also most of them were very cheap. I have 2 6's 2 5's (both fretless) and 2 4's, plus the Stick, that's it. my other instruments aren't basses and most aren't worth more than $100 or so, except my guitar, a Yamaha SG200s which listed for $1,200 but I got for $350 off musiciansfriend so... anyway, it's pretty important to have a spare of anything you rely on, I'm not into opulence for it's own sake, but utility.

well, back to the basement, gotta build another one... (hey, I need a 2 string slide bass!)

Utility is a big thing for me. I like for all my basses to do something different for me. I currently have only two: A 4-string fretted and a 5-string fretted. Now I need a fretless 4 (in progress) and a fretless 5. I may try another 6 (had a fretted one a few years ago), but it'll be fretless.

Even though Geddy Lee style was one of the options, I still had to grind the plastic down in the neck area of the guard to make it fit. All-in-all, though, I'm very happy

This is my bass as of earlier today: 1985 Schecter P/J, all original USA. You can't tell in the photos but you can actually see the wood grain beneath the red coat on the body.
