Couldn't help myself. Added the ocean turquoise Jazz from 1970.
Sweet, that blue with the rosewood board, blocks and binding, and the tort pickguard is a great combo visually
Pretty jazzy collection it is.

The grey & black bass is cool - is it a custom build?
That's one of the new colors for the Player Plus series called Silver Smoke. They also have Fiesta Red, Cosmic Jade, 3-Color Burst and Olympic Pearl.
Oh the headless is a Dave Bunker PBC bass with floating neck. Super cool bass. I did the fretless conversion.
Love PBC. Kiesel Vader borrowed a bit from these don't you think?

Do you find yourself using the bendwell much?
I do use it MovinTarget, I have 2 Status, one with and one without. I really love the sound/resonance of the one with the bendwell for some reason.

Meet my new project bass. This is a pretty old Jay Turser Stingray copy. When I got it, it had rusty strings, very dull frets, but it did work. This is a 3+1 tuner config which is not very common on Tursers or any other unlicensed copies. This bass also has the corny looking strap buttons, like a spacer with a washer... Whomever owned this before, I think replaced the tuners because it is 2+2 set and the D tuner ended up installed upside down. I have not seeing that before, but kind of cool solution. The tuners are very nice and hefty, but have no markings on them. They are working very well and smooth. The nut is plastic, but perfectly cut. The fretwork is immaculate, I had to give a nice steelwool rub down to the frets, now they are shiny and action is just under 1.75mm to be buzz-free under pretty heavy plucking. Truss rod nut in a perfect shape and truss rod works like new. I must say the neck is basically perfect and very well made.
Body is transparent red... I love the way this paintjob looks. No scratches just a few dents, but pretty significant ones. I wish it was in better cosmetic form. The body is very lite and pretty soft. I bet it is basswood. This had a tremendous neck-dive which I had to fix today, now it balances nicely on my leg even without a strap.
The original pick up, I had to pull out and retire, it is noisy mess. The routing is the body was large enough to put VFL5 I had laying around (as shown). I made a custom pickguard. This is an acrylic mockup to see i I got the holes right... Not yet. Once I figure this out, I will make it out of carbonfiber. I did not want plain round guard which makes it look like a banjo, I put this funky shape, I like it. I routed a battery compartment under the pickguard so I can power the VFL5, but this way it looks passive.
Originally It had weird controls where it had passive humbucker wired in parallel (1.2k), 500k knobs for volume and 2 tone controls 0.047uf and 0.068uf.
Doubt it was stock, for now I left that as is just put active VFL5. Now it has nice tone and no noise.
The bridge had to take a wd40 bath, it is all cromed solid steel and was pretty dull. I need to get some short setscrews for the bridge barrels. Not sure why they so long, half that length would have been enough. This bass sustains nicely.
Now that I know this bass is pretty awesome, I am thinking about fixing dents, an repainting the body. Not sure if transparent finish will be applicable once I fill the dents, will see. I will definitely cut a bone nut for it. I will probably put a classic 3 band preamp, move output jack to the side and probably find a MM pickup. This Peavey is a good pickup, but I already have a bass with those in. And of course I will need to get the proper 3+1 set of tuners. But for now this is it...

“good:
-Tuners are solid
-Electronics are quiet
-Neck has been stable as the humidity has dropped
-quality bridge
-unique tone/voice that still sounds like a Fender somehow (passive and active)
-comfortable to play
pet peeves:
-jack location is stupid and should’ve been on the pickguard.
-Tough to lean against anything
-certain guitar stands don’t work
-1st fret feels further away than a jazz but not as bad as a thunderbird
-cut on the eq is drastic as is boost
-active treble knob is at a frequency range that I don’t seem to use much
-wish it had a truss rod wheel (they had a chance to be different with this model)
bad:
-knobs have some casting flash that can feel sharp around the top of the knob
-pickups arrived installed askew from front to back (no care in getting the height uniform between screws)
-center detent on mid eq knob is gritty and nonexistent counter clockwise but present when rotating clockwise.
-blend pot could’ve been a 3way toggle based on how it acts. Any sliver past the detent either way and it sounds like a soloed pickup.
-plastic battery compartment doesn’t seem very robust
This past month, I’ve been rotating this bass into rehearsals and practice. It has the ability to sound vintage in passive and modern in active all while still having a very fender-y sound. Neck pickup sounds very reminiscent of a soloed jazz neck pu and bridge pu sounds like it’s jazz counterpart. The slight mid scoop is still there with both pu’s on as well. It barks through at my band rehearsals as I eq for mids in that context. It has the ability to really push the lows if you are looking for that low end. I haven’t really interacted with the high eq knob because 3/4 of my cabs have no horn or tweeter and I can’t tell much difference unless I’m playing through the one cab that does (which I keep turned down anyway). I’m not a huge fan of the stock fender strings but I’m too cheap to cut them off before they sound dead. I enjoy the look. I enjoy the sound that I can dial in. I enjoy the feel of playing it as it feels familiar if you already play jazz basses.
Solid effort with some need for additional QC in the electronic component area.
There are better options in the price range but none are going to have the looks like this one.

Edit : some people don’t like the lack of passive tone control. It sounds great in passive. I like that it has the passive switch, something the Stingrays lack.

When Fender Japan came out with re-issues of the 70's International colors my pants got wiggly. I knew what must be done at that point. I did a thing. Monaco Yellow and Morocco Red. Crazy nice builds.
