Interesting... If you lowered the position of the 32" so the base of it's fretboard was aligned next to the base of the 30" Ray's fretboard, the 32" neck would appear to be of similar length?

Yeap - the necks are very close, but the neck sits lower into the MM body than the Warmoth when they are in a stand side by side.

I think that is how on the Warmoth body you can put a 30 or a 32 n3ck on it. I guess. . . . . . .

Also the 'knee rest' on the Warmouth body looks to be a bit higher than the Ray's, so that could bring the reach to the headstock nut and frets a bit closer..?

It is my 1971 Precision I bought around Nov of 1971. First bass I ever bought.

GFB can I use that in the future, RV - Real Vintage. I have never heard that so it is yours.

Oh yeah, Saturday went ok with the new band. They were a bit loud, but the Sire P5 did the trick. I am convinced that it is the best 499 I have spent on a bass since 1971. lol and I still feel it is a great looking and playing bass.

A floating top bass is one of my own custom designs. Basically the top is 1/4" thick and is only attached to the rest of the body at the neck and bridge. the top is smaller than the body (by 1/4" in all directions) and sits 1/4" above the body. you can actually look through the bass from one side to the other with only the controls obstructing the view.
My original design was to have just a ring for the main body with the back completely open. I found that this had a rather hollow, almost dead sound with no sustain. so i redesigned it as a semi hollow. the top still floats above the body but the reverb from the hollowed out body give it a sound like a hollow body but with a barely audible softness which, with the right settings plays extremely well for songs with bass lead parts.... aka "take my breath away" while still being able to blast metal music. the pickups are EMG David Ellefson signature set with a blend pot.
I had this at a show a week ago and was offered $2500.00 but for now this is my personal instrument of choice.
I might decide to sell it after i complete my clamshell-hollow ghost bass, but the jury is still out on that..

I also cleaned it up since these pictures and used inserts to cover the screws holding the top to the body

It must be amazing to have your first bass....especially when it is a nice as that one!!! Enjoy that thing...or continue to enjoy it!!

Yah - same with a J... good for a photo-shoot, but not for playing. I do use the bridge cover on my '66 J but even that's a stretch for me. Primarily because I spend most of my time over the B pu.

I suspect this is a well-worn question, but do you know what the original intent was for the ashtrays? Was it to do with grounding issues back in the day or something?

On the first, '51 Precision - I've seen pics of an example where a ground wire went under the pu cover feet. But I'm pretty sure it was a cosmetic addition.
