Yes, Leo thought the pick ups were unappealing. I guess everyone was still stuck on double bass.
I could have sworn there were bridge ashtrays that had foam/padding on them to act as a mute...
I remember that. Very 1950s and 1960s.
My bridge ashtray has a (really dried up) foam mute. I keep it in the case and I put an American Original ashtray on mine. I want to keep the original safe and sound.
You are correct. I have also read they (pick up) covers were to help shield out RF noise but who really knows...not me. I'm just a guy. I have some. Sometimes they are on. Sometimes they are off.
The bridge cover on my '75 had foam in it. Also, the foam under the pickups eventually melted down and left a super hard black plastic residue which I had to clean out and replace with some foam weatherstripping after about 35 years.
The bridge ashtray on my 76 P bass that I got 5 months ago has the foam mute and I only noticed it about two weeks ago. Possibly not too clear in the pic.

We even made it into an Eintacht sampler. Bands can produce a song and if it is good, they will release that song on one of their fan music compilations. It’s always nice to sit in the stadium and listen to your song during halftime
Got this beauty nearing completion. Mahogany body with a flame maple top.. it’s gonna be loaded with dual Nordstrand Big Blademan pickups w/ their proprietary JC-3b preamp.. roasted maple neck / unmarked roasted maple fretboard.. it’s gonna be wild!

As for the bridge cover on my 71 - it had that rubber mute inside - so I think that explains that. I always wondered on the pickup cover, but actually I played one day with it off then back on and for some reason I feel it makes the pickup have a tighter response. Remember on the original Rickenbacker horseshoe pickup the split cover was a part of the magnetic field - if you removed it the pickup did not work.
I read this article with McCartney talking about how he removed it and found the pickup no longer worked. But I play with mine on - Jamerson can be that wrong can he?
But actually, I use it as a hand rest when using a pic close to the neck. And a thumb rest when closer to the bridge. But who know - I never learned to play bass anyway.
