Just watched this - you know.., never been a fan, but if he actually recorded that doing what he's doing in that vid - I'm very impressed with his talent. His performance skill is undeniable. Michael Manring has that level of musicianship and watching how he delivers that beautiful composition is a very engaging performance!

I had a SR 5'r for a bit - for that style of bass, it's become a very honed iconic design. Can't go wrong with one!
There is an interview with Vai where he's like, "Crap, now that the Hydra is real, I have to write a song that uses it!".
I like that it is a different sort of composition for him.

Wow - so many ibanez musicians (I think that's what they were called). Some 30 years ago I had one of those with a single pickup, all passive, that I had converted by a local luthier to a fretless. It was such a good fretless bass ... I replaced it after some years with a pedulla pentabuzz - on a feel and quality level they were quite comparable (the pedulla of course being a five string with coated fretboard and active electronics, and also an angled neck being handbuild in small batches was on a different level).

No idea what strings.. they're roundwound I think, got red fabric at ends.. rotosounds maybe.
Just wish I could get the damn truss rod cover to come off.. looks like its stripped I tried every size screwdriver.

Stewart Small Scale.
I hate VVT controls, so I did a little mod. Installed CTS master Vol and Tone pots, and a Les Paul pickup selector switch. On this bass, I almost exclusively play on the neck pickup with the tone rolled off. With these D'Addario NYXL strings, it sound so smooth and strong, and sustains for...well not days, but much longer than I anticipate needing.
I recently did a similar mod on the jazz bass, except with a mini 3-way switch. Also I've never seen a Steinberger in any color other than black.
They offer the XT2 in black, white, metallic blue, and yellow. I thought the yellow was a big very happy color, so I went with that. Now that I have it, I sitll like it a lot.
I've had the Rickenbacker since 2004, the Sterling Stingray for about 3 years and the Fender P is brand new.
This thread is making me drool. I've been looking through it all week. Many, many beautiful instruments.
