That stung a bit, but the one that still sets my teeth on edge for purging was a Fender-Japan Limited Edition "All-Black" JB62…especially given the hoops I jumped through to acquire it. :banghead: :bawl:

I was hoping this post was going to be a tour de force of 16 or so basses complete with pictures, memories, and mild regrets.

I guess we're all just waiting for that guy to show up and show off what he had.

Well, I guess for some of us (myself included), it's hard to get all enthusiastic-an-stuff on this thread. After all, blowing the dust off these memories and pictures is kinda like picking at old wounds. :crying: ;)

Seemed like a good idea at the time but the fretless is gone and I'd rather have the P bass now.

Other than that, my gear gas progress and has been very positive, leading to these...

'79 Precision fretless, natural finish with unlined rosewood (or maybe ebony?) fingerboard. If only I'd realised how few of those they made...

The one that got away from me you won't believe. I worked in a music store that was a Fender dealer. We got in your average run of the mill wine Mexi Jazz. I had both sold and played 50 just like it. But there was something special about that bass. It played like a dream. I played it every day. It spoke to me. But I kept talking myself out of buying it because it was "just a Mexi Jazz". One day, on a day off, I decided I was going to quit being stupid over the country of origin and go in and buy the dang bass. It was gone. One of my best friends had just sold it based on my recommendations.

1956 P. I regretted it pretty soon after trading it for a 65 P and a 64 Hofner 500/1. I still have the 65 P. The Hofner didn't talk to me, so I traded it for a almost mint 1978 Fender Antigua Jazz.

A '64 Fender Custom Shop Jazz Bass Relic, Lake Placid Blue

Had it ordered and delivered from the shop because the one I had pined after in the music store got sold right when I wanted it. This bass was made and shipped to the store for me. Played up and down the West Coast with it, recorded with it. Brought it back to Pittsburgh and started a new band with it, it was my number 1. Sold it to buy a house...I hate my house.

One that got away was one that I never owned. A local used place got a short-scale Alembic Series 1 in for sale at a very good price. I spoke with one of the sales guys there, told him I wanted it but had to get to a bank (this was pre-ubiquitous ATMs and debit cards) to get the cash, take me about an hour. He promised to hold it for me, no problem. I was back in 40 minutes, it was gone, he'd sold it to somebody else.

I'm still really peeved...

This is why Fender never should've discontinued the Midnight Wine finish…it's too awesome! :D

Wow! That's a great, but sad story. I kinda feel guilty giving it a "Like". :unsure:

A '61 stack knob Jazz Bass. The sunburst finish had been sanded, covered with purple paisley decals, sanded, and painted with drippy yellow paint. Everything else original. Best neck I ever played. A friend offered it to me for 2 grand and I balked. Gone! That was 20 years ago. Kicking myself ever since. But the friend is a better friend now than ever, which is no small consolation!
