I still regret passing on a Koa Travis Bean guitar in a Tacoma pawn shop in about 1990 for $200 that would now sell for $6000 to $8000. I'm not a guitarist and this isn't a guitar forum but still...
The bass I most regret not buying was once a subject on this list and was continuously listed on Craiglist for a couple years: an Aria CSB super Cardinal of some sort. It had a set neck, dual pickups, contoured top, short or medium scale. Dead gorgeous. I guess I forgot that it was pink. That helps explain it a bit.

Rather mundane compared to some of the others on this list, but the first real bass I played was a Yamaha Motion B with the 2+2 headstock. Black, no cheesy 80's Yamaha Motion B graphic on the front, EMG HB's, chrome bridge and as I recall either an ebony FB or really dark stained RW.
Got many question on what it was, as well as compliments on the tone. Guy (best friend and our lead guitarist) offered it to me for what a shop was giving him in trade (under $200) but I just couldn't swing it.
Been looking for that one ever since, and haven't seen it. I've seen ones that come close, but the only 1 I saw that had the exact HW, electronics and 2+2 headstock was lavender (had the graphics on the front). And that would have clashed with my red keytar.

Sorry, mate... probably edgy due to lack of either coffee, or tequila... depending on what time of day it was... once, I unfortunately mixed the two, and ever since, I've been known around my house as Jose Valdez...
My early 80's L-200 e without the fin in the headstock. Maple neck and played incredible. It was originally 80's canary yellow I think. Had a black spray job when I bought it. Took two week painting it seafoam green with help from Reranch. Loved it but sold it to help out my ex-girlfriend. Would love to have it back. Now I'm a sad man with only one L-2000, my 83 with a rosewood fretboard. Only here would people understand that lol.
Although not a bass, but in my early twenties I once bought a mid-60's Supro amp from my roommate. A 2x12 combo with only 1 speaker, no gain or reverb, just volume treble bass and an old school tremelo knob-perfect for CCR stuff. When you cranked it it had that old-school bluesy tube amp sound. I was using it with a Japanese Harmony guitar that had DiMarzio humbuckers in it. But I didn't like it because it didn't have reverb and gain.
I gave it back to him and cash for a lawsuit Ibanez strat and a Traynor amp with a JBL speaker, but I told him if he ever wanted to sell it let me know and I will pay more and take it back. He ended up selling it a few months later. I should have never done that. I still regret that to this day.

Most of my "cry stories" are related to decades gone by when prices were dirty cheap to today's standards.
Probably the saddest was back in 1975. Before the internet, kiddies was a weekly classified paper called, Tradin' Times. Some dude was selling a pre-CBS Oly White Jazz Bass for $250. I had just gotten married and didn't have any money to buy it. But, prices like that were typical for back then.

1. The first of two 1977 Black Eagles that I had, SN #K770658. I couldn't justify the extra cost over the reissue so I returned it, but regretted returning it. It was then purchased by Vintage Guitar magazine, and the guy would NOT sell it back to me last I checked. =0( The only ORIGINAL beagle I know of to be under 10 lbs, and weight is a big deal to me now thanks to my shoulder (the second '77 I had was just too heavy).
2. My main Modulus, SN #040404. Quantum 6-string with a natural wood top (Chechen I think). Hated having to sell that one. Then again, it's almost definitely too heavy for me now.

I don't miss any bass I've sold. There was a used Wal for $1000 about 20 years ago in a store, that I really liked, but it was $1000 more than I had at the time, so it was impossible. I sometimes feel a sting in the chest when I listen to "The Pot" (Tool) because of this. That's about the only one for me.
