The one that got away.

I can't think of any bass I ever sold that I really miss. Guess I'm lucky.

The only one that got away is the one I didn't have the cash for. It was 1981: a Carl Thompson fretless 4 string for $650 used. The store only offered a 30 day layaway, I was just married, starting my first job after college, no credit cards so money was tight.

For reference, in 1981 $650 would buy you a new P bass. So that CT was a steal for whoever did buy it.

P.S. Hard to believe that in 1981 a married couple who were both employed at well paying jobs couldn't get a credit card, unlike today when banks wil give anybody a card.

Custom shop Gibson Firebird in Vintage White. Built during the time Firebirds were not in normal production.

Missed it at one local shop then it was traded in at another shop I actually was a better customer at. I looked/played/lusted after.

Called the store back made a counter offer which was accepted .(on the phone).

Went to pick it up the guy running the store-owner was not involved in operations due to other enterprises-he rang it up with a higher price claiming I agreed to XXX plus tax. On principle I counted the $ out, laid on the counter said this was our agreement-take it or leave it.

He was as stubborn as me , wouldn’t budge & neither would I. That’s the one that bugs me the most I didn’t get. I’ve wished many times I’d just swallowed my pride, but the bullet & I’d still have it today. I do now have a Vintage Sunburst & a non reverse Custom Shop but this one was the one.

1981 Gibson Explorer bass. I traded it off for new Am Standard Fender Jazz in 1995 that I didn’t keep long at all. I’d love to have that Explorer back now; the ‘95 Jazz, not so much.

The one that got away on a buy was an all original 1964 Fender Jazz. Back in the mid 1980’s my wife and the owner of the Jazz’s wife worked together. My wife came home telling me about her co-worker’s husband had “an old Fender bass” for sale for $400. I was young and not very knowledgeable about basses at the time, so I didn’t even go look at it. Fast forward to a battle of the bands gig about 6 weeks later, and a guy in one of the bands drug me from my vehicle to the stage to see his new bass. It was the 64 Jazz. I wasn’t as impressed then as I would be now…..

I’ve owned a few Modulus Q5s but this one was special. Honestly, what I liked the most about this one was how under the radar it looked. Its tone was incredibly growly and punchy. It could cut a mix while simultaneously filling out the entire low end. I’ve reached out to the guy I sold it to a few times over the years saying if he ever decides to sell it to let me know, but I’ve never heard anything back. Funny thing, I’ve never seen another one like it. I know Geoff is still making basses. Kind of wonder if I could ask him to remake this one.

When I realized I was locked into 5ers, I sold my 4s, 'cept for one MIM P.

I've since strung it BEAD, and glad I kept it, but now wish I'd kept my MIM Jazz.

I paid ~$265 at the local GC Used, just a dent in the headstock end, and it came with this slightly scuffed TKL case. :)

A een mocha 76 or 77 Pbass that i picked up around 2000 in Amsterdam where it had been played by a guy in an accordion trio every weekend for 28 years.

That bass, not too heavy either, had an e string that carried low end big time, like no bass i had before or since.

Let ik go around 2011 when i cleared out all my gear. Really wish i still had it.

The most recent one is one I passed on last summer. And it's sitting in my house - right now!

Last 4th of July, I was meeting an old friend to pick up a cij 51 he's been holding for me until we could connect. (we're about 3 hours apart)
He mentioned he had a CS J for sale on his local Craigslist. It was a limited run copper commissioned for the Guitar Broker in FL. I didn't think much of it in the photos, but the price was too good, so I pinged another friend of ours and said one of us should grab this. As soon as I did that, I realized it would have been an easy upgrade from another Jazz I had - but it was too late, he said "I'll take it".

When we all met up, I took one look at that Jazz, and it was just gorgeous in the daylight, with a birdseye maple neck I hadn't noticed in the photos. Nice and light and resonant.
I knew I made a big mistake, but at least it was staying "in the family" as we've always said.
(and I love my '51 reissue)

Anyway, my buddy that bought the Jazz has been making good use of it - plays about 150 shows/year.
He called me a few weeks ago and mentioned it was on the noisy side - even for a Jazz - and asked me to shield it and set it up.
I told it it would be a few weeks.... ;)

Again - the pictures don't do it justice...

For me it's definitely the 2 stingrays on the bottom of this pic (the DD3 and the passive okoume bfr's). The passive okoume one I had traded for a SR5 Special which I am more than happy with but now I just wish I bought the SR5 and kept the stingray. The DD3 Stingray I sold locally and I reached out to the buyer to let him know I will buy it back if he chooses to sell it.

alas... my 1976 Rickenbacker 3000 (black) - pawned it once to pay the rent, but got it back out of pawn the next month. Then sold it a year or two later (early 90s) for no memorable reason. About the same time also had a Travis Bean TB2000 (Koa) stolen from my apartment in New Westminster, along with an early-70s SGII that had be equipped with EMGs... wish I had both of them back! Other than that, nothing springs to mind
