The Orville

I just want to say, this show really is a breath of fresh air on many levels. Okay, maybe not the earth-shaking water cooler discussion impact of a Seinfeld or The Office, but it is substantively endearing and entertaining, and I have to credit one Mr. Seth MacFarlane for a high water mark in his career. Live action seems to have brought his brand of humor back down to earth a bit (even from deep space) and made it more palatable. There is a lot of subtle humor and dry wit ("Oh yeah, the elevator button works for you..."), and you need to hang on every word of dialog to get the little chuckles in between the belly laughs. And as an actor MacFarlane really sells it, I had no idea he has such great comedic timing and instincts, as does the rest of the cast. He and his writing staff have an excellent grip on the genre and have done their homework. And it's fairly beautiful to look at. Quite the package.

I have great admiration and respect for the restraint the scripts display, especially in this emotionally-charged and volatile age we live in; none of the sexual-socio-political-racial-religious themes take it too far. They always seem to reign it in with plenty of room to spare, yet it still remains thought-provoking, relevant, and funny. A strangely polite show for these times.

One episode left in this first season, and I'm hoping for at least a couple more, and that they will stay the course (pun intended).

EDIT: I just learned S1 may go as many as 13 episodes, and it has been renewed. Yay!

The same thing keeps happening in the Star Trek: Discovery thread, where some seem to think season one is over.

Well, be sure to make a fuss about it!

Count me as a fan. I like that the show doesn't take itself too seriously, like a lot of sci-fi Trek-like shows do. A great balance of societal issues, subtle jabs, homage to the genre (paying respect, not ripping off like some have suggested), and humor.

I sure hope they pick it up for season two. Anybody know about that or mention it yet? :D
