The Orville

Is the doctor an awful actress or is it just me. She wasn't good in DS9. She has that unnatural delivery like young kids in a school play.

It’s not just you. I’m not sure if it’s her, or the way the character is written and/or being directed.

Early in this thread I said Seth MacFarlane casting himself in the lead role was probably the show’s weakest link. I retract that comment.

This thread is funny. The Orville is one of the better acted, written, and directed shows on network television right now, yet some of the people here just crucify the show for the tiniest little things. Nothing like expecting a show to be bad and then generating evidence to support your opinion.

It's a TV show, the acting isn't going to be worth little statues all the time. I just enjoy The Orville for what it is.

The original title of this thread was something like “The Orville, new Star Trek show by (ugh) Seth MacFarlane”.

By and large the comments here have been positive. I don’t recall anyone “crucifying” the show. In fact the OP (or someone) changed the title of the thread to remove the implied negativity.

Nitpicking? Yes, it’s bound to occur. But overall the reaction here has been very favorable.

Nitpicking is a better way to say it, rather than crucifying, I'll give you that. And yes, I agree, the vibe is overall positive. It is somewhat amusing that some will not budge, no matter what and will always find a negative. And that's fine, we don't all have to like the same thing. I'm actually surprised I like the show. I'm usually pretty lukewarm, at best, with this type of show. Perhaps because this show is different from many in this genre, I like it. I can certainly appreciate how some might not.

I changed it. I decided I like the show. I still think everything else he's done besides Cosmos is garbage.

In which way?

I can answer that even after only seeing one episode of STD.

The Orville is familiar and pleasantly bland with just the right amount of Trek substance, and MacFarlane humor, to “engage” me. It doesn’t overtax my brain. It’s like the tryptophan in turkey: A mild sedative. Think classic Star Trek with a couple slices of jalapeño garnish.

STD was way too demanding and deep for my feeble brain to contend with.

Well in one sense it doesn't matter which one is better--and either could exist
But The Orville strikes me as truer to Star Trek.

I get that Discovery in some ways is behind the scenes & Another side of wha was going on--but sloppy writing, poor characterization & messing with their own internal essence are weaknesses for Discovery.

the Orville is just fun

STD pretty much honked off 90% of ST fans...starting with their new idea of Klingons.
From things as little as Failing on the uniform badges...then the bad writing...idiotic actor choices...
not to mention PUTTING IT ON A SPECIAL PAY CHANNEL...
they couldn't get half the old fans back even if the cast performed topless at this point.

STD, much like any S.T.D., should simply be avoided prophillactically, by never buying that channel.

This thread is funny.
For starters, this part I agree with. It is, unlike the Orville for the most part... ;)

Hm. So to you it's either a masterpiece, or current TV kinda sucks. Let's see:

It's opinions. You know, those orifice-like things? Don't let those contrary to yours annoy you so much.

OK, so, no masterpiece. Got it.

^ This other post reads much more reasoned overall. I applaud that. And I myself still find amusing that you need to paint lukewarm reception as stubbornness and nitpicking. (By all means I've no problem with you keeping at it if you choose to, to be clear.)
And it's way better than Discovery...
Not at all IMO.
See? Opinions.

Nice! I've never had a post of mine here on TB so thoroughly dissected. Well done, sir!

Look, I just find The Orville kind of fun to watch and don't over analyze it. I don't expect much from the show so I'm rarely disappointed. My goal for the show is to be entertained, and for that, mission accomplished. Is it art in its highest form? Certainly not. Is it a decent show? Sure, for me.

I do enjoy this thread. I find it interesting, and sometimes amusing, to see what those that are much more into Star Trek style shows than me think about it.
