Say, do any of you guys know anything about the 17.5 mm string spacing vs. the 19 mm? What I’m wondering is, is the 19 mm spacing wider at the nut as well as the bridge? Or to put it another way, is the 19 mm neck wider overall, from end to end?

You didn't specify which model you're asking about. The Thunderbass ET5, for example, is 1-7/8" at the nut, regardless of whether you have 17 or 19mm string spacing at the bridge.

I think Pedulla probably uses a standard width for each neck, dependent on the number of strings, not on the width at the bridge. However, check out pedulla.com to be sure.

Another possible difference between models is the neck radius. Pedulla says, "We use a 12” radius on our 4- and 5-string basses, and a 15” radius on our 5-string 19mm and 6 -string basses. The higher the number, the flatter the fingerboard." (See [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] for lots of good info on Pedulla basses.) So that should mean that the radius will be 12" on a 5 string with 17mm spacing, but will be 15" on a 5 string with 19mm spacing. I have an ET5 with 19mm, and it feels like 15" to me, but I haven't measured it.

Thanks for the info, RB! I'm looking at maybe buying a 17.5 mm Pentabuzz and wanted to make sure it wasn't any narrower up at the nut than my 19 mm Thunderbass.

It appears to be 1-7/8", just like the Thunderbass.

Wayne-

There is a slight difference, nothing major, but if you are used to flatter fingerboards the 19" will probably feel a little more natural. Also be aware that the 19s are a tad heavier on the neck side than the 17.5s.

My Fodera Monarch came with Duncan Straploks installed, and I have decided that I like them and want to install Straploks on all my basses.

My first thought was to get the Dual Design Straplok because that would allow me to use any strap and it can be installed without any drilling. (Just use a grinder to slightly reduce the width of the original Pedulla screw heads so they will fit inside the button.)

Unfortunately, the Dual Design Straploks stick out inconveniently far from the body of the Thunderbass ET5:

So, now I am thinking about installing the Flush Mount Straploks on my Pedulla. The only drawback I can think of is that I've heard that some people don't like the Duncan Straploks and to install the Flush Mount version I would have to drill the top 7/16" to 1/2" of the screw hole to a width of about 3/8" to make room to insert the flush mount strap button. Once I've done that, I can't easily reinstall the original Pedulla strap button and that might make it more difficult to sell the bass someday. (I don't expect to ever sell it, but who knows what tomorrow will bring?)

Any thoughts, suggestions, comments?

Personally i don't think it would hurt the resale value...but then again i use dunlop locks on all my basses too I think if someone really wanted to buy your bass, that wouldn't stop them...but thats just my opinion.

Personally, I like the standard Dunlops. Having the strap further from the end of the horn, can help a neck-heavy bass balance better. And, the extra space at the other button gives me room to loop my chord thru.

I spoke to Christine at Pedulla today. She asked Mike for his recommendation regarding the flush mount Straploks. Mike told her to tell me (and so I'm telling everyone) that he does not recommend installing the flush mounts.

He did not say that it can't be done, and he did not say it would weaken the horn to drill out a 1/2" deep, 3/8" hole to insert the flush mount receptacle. But he said it would be tricky to do and he didn't recommend it.

That sounds sort of like a CYA explanation to me -- not really the definitive answer I was hoping for. So, for now I'm going to try to learn to love the Dual Design straploks I put on, or maybe I'll switch to the Dunlop Original Straploks which appear to be flatter and may not stick out quite so far.
