The PRS Club

Here I am with my GG5, playing in a local big band:

Got my Kestrel this morning. It was a good deal as a demo from Sweetwater. It was torture to not unpack it for hours. I have not taken any photos yet. The Kingfisher comes either Thursday or Friday. As soon as I can get photos, I will post them. I never liked a Sunburst guitar until this one. I will HAVE to learn to play now that I have this beauty!

I’m trying out this older PRS bass after reading lots of negative stuff online about them. It’s well built and comfortable to play. The active circuit is a bit of an enigma and that’s possibly where the negativity arises from. It seems to enhance some of the sub frequencies and apart from that the passive and active modes sound pretty similar with the exception of the active signal level boost.
I find the bass quite a good instrument otherwise if used in passive mode through my Avalon U5.I’m attaching a couple pics of the bass.

Really nice basses around here... I was looking to get an American made jazz bass but since I knew about the Kestrel I just can't get my eyes out of it... how it sounds like compared to a classic jb?

Welcome to TB and the PRS Club! My Kestrel is very close to a classic j, but it has something all its own. There are a couple of videos on YouTube featuring the Kestrel that will give you a good idea. The 3-piece jazz combo video is best at showing off its voice, IMO.

If you’re looking for a j, the Kestrel is a very good option for the money, especially if you can pick one up used. Good luck!

We'll I'm sold.
I've watched a bunch of videos..sounds like a jazz with something else on it's own...even I think it nails presicion tones with the bridge pick up roll off imo...
The thing is a buddy of mine brought a prs yesterday to a jam and I was amazed to the construction quality...the details, the inlays... everything!!!
So a bass like that with the sound of a J it's a win/win for me. I'm selling all my gear to purchase a Boss Gt-1 and a Headrush frfr... next move is getting the Kestrel.

I just picked up a used Kingfisher off of Reverb. It's beautiful but the pickups seem very weak compared to the pickups on my Ibanez Mikro bass. I have to nearly double the gain to get the same volume as my passive Ibanez. Is it normal for the Kingfisher to have weak pickups?

thanks,
Hugh

I took it to my local music shop and they figured it out by tapping on the pickups with a screw driver. Just the bridge side of the neck pickup and the neck side of the bridge pickup are working. Also the tone control didn't seem to be doing much. The shop opened it up and the wiring looked stock as far as we could tell.

Luckily I'm getting a full refund from the dealer on Reverb.

Does anyone know if the natural finish on the Kingfishers is a glossy or satin finish?

thanks,
Hugh

Hi. I’m a relatively new member of the TalkBass forum. This is a fantastic site. I purchased a used 2015 PRS Gary Grainger bass in Faded Whale Blue a few weeks ago.

Here is some background info. I took guitar lessons as a child. I played bass in various bands back in the 80’s. I stopped playing for approx. 25 years! Mistake, hey life happens.

I picked up guitar again approx. 10 years ago when my daughter started taking guitar lessons. I bought a guitar then two, five, ten, etc. I discovered PRS guitars and love them, I’ve have owned many and currently have four.

During this time, I played guitar with some local bands, nothing great, but it has been fun. I recently had an opportunity to play bass for a band for a short five song set at a corporate event. I knew I could do it. I always considered myself to be a better bass player than guitar player. I had a cheap Samick bass that I had in storage and a started playing it and it felt like home again!!!

Now I need a real bass. Since I have owned so many amazing PRS guitars, I decided the get a PRS bass. I got a great deal on my GG bass on eBay from an excellent seller.

This bass is incredible. Superior playability, tone and looks. I did a short gig with it yesterday and it was great. I am proud to be a member of this club.
