Dude, that's just it. You're not wrong, and it's your bass. While others echew your ideas simply because it's a 2,000 dollar instrument, I see it as your tool of expression. You should be able to express yourself any way you please, and if down the road you regret it, so be it, you live and learn

Which is why I'm trying to give ideas that are a happy medium.
Any which way, good luck with your decision, and enjoy the bass and play it like you stole it.

I think thats a great way to percieve things in a matieralistic driven world.

You buy a bass to play it. You buy it cause you love to play it.

If you buy a bass with the intent of its resale value, or what its worth you are buying in vain. Too much of this on TB, People buy buy buy and then sell sell sell and you notice these same people too worried about names, brands, prices rather than sound, playability, & sentimental value. Dude is making a rastabacker, good for him. In true fashion rasta don't deal with commercialism, rasta don't care about re sale value. Rasta lets the ear be the judge

As someone who would give a testicle for one of those basses -- in any condition, mind you -- please, for the love of all that is sacred, don't do this.

Somewhere out in the future, an older version of yourself is trying to get back to the "present" you, and slap some sense into you. The fact that you're even asking people's opinions on this shows that you have some inkling that it might not be a great idea. Trust that little voice.

Yes Rastas do this Rastas do that but we are not talking about a grown up musician. At 15 years old, your tastes change every couple years, it is the age where you start to form your own personnality, Painting a bass that could probably be used all his life with a tacky color when it's very possible that in a year or two he just isn't into the whole rasta thing anymore is just a bad idea.

The guy is very lucky to have been given such a great instrument and he says he don't give a crap about resale value because well he didn't pay for it.

If he still plays bass, he'll f-in slap himself in the forhead at 20 because he'll probably still love how that bass sound but won't want to gig it anywhere since it'll look so out of place.

Of course it's very possible that he'll keep being the way he is now all his life grow rastas and only play on reggae bands all his life right :eyebrow:

So what he can repaint the thing if his heart changes. You can play a rasta colored bass in a funk or blues band who cares? I think at the ripe age of 15, people should stop telling him what to do in regards to matieral things and let him be his own person, if he changes he can deal with it .

you said it yourself you start to make your own personality. what the hell is this the problem with this then? isn't this a function of that?

Why don't you go preach, slap or w/e you want to some hard rock or punk rockers for putting stickers all over their bass?

Or why don't you wake jaco out of the dead and slap him for the condition his Jazz bass was in.

Geez McFly, he's adding a little color to it, not taking a saw to it. I guess I just don't see the harm of someone wanting to personalize THEIR instrument. It's not yours. it's HIS.

As for the second part, no necessarily. Maybe he's excited by the idea and wanted to share it and maybe, tho not to you, just maybe it'll be the over the top thing that keeps calling it into his hands, making him want to play it more...drive his passion. Wouldn't all you naysayers feel bad if that were the case and he listenned to you and then regretted it to the point of not playing it?

yes, i think i was 15 when i went through a reggae phase as well. i am 33 now, and while i still enjoy a little bit here and there, i would be real bummed at myself for ruining a rick at age 15.

i mean, go nuts... it's your bass... but there are many times in my life when i wish i would have listened to older folks telling me not to do something stupid that i thought was was real cool at the time.
