Because once upon a time, I promised myself that I would only get something tattooed if I could be satisfied with its design after waiting a full year for it. And at 27, I still haven't found a design that I liked longer than 8 months.

The point of the tattoo story is to have patience. If your idea stands the test of time, it is a good idea. If you're really gung ho about painting it, wait one full year, save your money for the paint job and take it into a reputable shop to get it done right.

Or just go the vinyl decal route.

you really said something when you was talking about those tattoos. You have a very good point. while you are growing in personality (->30 (around that)) and you are facing big decisions, take your time to really think over it ! you could changes, but if the decision stands the time of wait it might be a good idea, as Superjesus said.

i will report back to you all when i get a fretless rick and then there will be no way that anyone on this money, resail happy site can do to stop me from giving it that paint job. infact, i will post a yearly thread on how the rastabacker is doing to show you all how someone still actualy cares enough about a bass and how it sounds to actualy keep it for more than five seconds and then sell it and get a new one like it was a pair of freaking underwear!

As a person who is in the middle of having a bass done with a green-gold-red finish and is spending exponentially more than the value of a Ric, I still tell you not to do it.

It's not the bass for it, and doing it yourself, unless you're a pro quality finish applier, is going to look like dookie.

I too was way into reggae when I was 15. I happen to still be way into it now that I'm 38. I also play it on stage and am having a bass built for the sound I want and will have a certain look for stage use. My bass is having pretty much the top of the heap pro finishing, it's a 'rasta-burst' and will be trans over a very figured top...much different than a basement refin, of a guitar that while viable for reggae would be far from my first choice.

Of course, it's your bass, and your choice. I happen to know that the 5K I spend will not have a high resale value, but I don't sell gear, and my love of reggae isn't a phase, its a long time passion.

No but they can define one, though.

All I'm saying is it's a rather unusual choice for reggae seeing as ricks are rather well known for their treble/mids rather than low end, which to me is what I think of when I think about Reggae bass lines.

But if it works for the band then whatever.

I completely trashed a brand new 2005 Fender MIA Jazz Bass on stage (in 2005). I was in a thrash/joke metal band at the time...and I was drunk. People gave me so much s**t for doing that, but I defended my actions by reminding them that, "that was my bass--not your's. It is what I wanted to do at the time and that decision had nothing to do with your opinion." Sure, I've felt regrets here and there about it. But, I'm glad I did it.

To put this in context with this thread: It is the OP's choice to do whatever he wants to do with HIS OWN PERSONAL THINGS. However, the OP has to be willing to suffer through the many opinions that he requested.

Actually, if you don't mind searching out how to get someone to do this, you should put the Rastabaker logo on the headstock where the screw-on Rick logo is. Find someone who can make a plastic plate with "Rastabaker" in the Rick font for you, in sweet colors. That will stand out like nobody's business!

Edit: And please please please please please if you get this paint job, have it professionally done so that it looks great. The bass is expensive, and the idea is sweet (IMO), so if you're going to go and do this, try and make it look the best that it can. The pros can make sure that its finished well, looks good, and won't chip or peel on you! Keep in touch!
