Just needed to cover the "only old codgers like passive basses" responses, pre-emptively dontcha know

Which kinda makes me wonder what the average age of a Reverend bass owner is....

I see a request for a "walking cane" style tremelo on the NEW Reverand basses just for you old bastards. LOL

I thought the stock Rev pickups were hot enough for sure. I also found 'em a bit 'grainy' just missing something. Air, presence, detail ? Tough to articulate but stock the Rumblefish didn't have it for me - Aero Type 1's fixed that ...

I've done a bunch of pickup and pre-amp swapping over the years and by observation, with 1, maybe 2 exceptions* - the hotter a pickup is the less I'm going to like it on a fretted bass. It seems that the extra oomph comes at the expense of sweetness. If you're all about the punch and impact kinda Ampeg rock thing - by all means. (I find it interesting that it seems like every other week someone is redoing the pickups in their Geddy Lee in search of more growl, what ever the heck that is ...)

Normally I would prefer the more vintage 60's style Duncan SJB1 to the hotter SJB2. I had a set of the 2's lying about and installed them in a MIM toothless J and wow - the lack of hi's and emphasis on the mids & low's was really cool. (I suck as a f'less player so those basses never stay around long - I generally have no call for the f'less ... I'm quite sure all those toipics are related... that MIM turned out well though ...) So depending on what you want the bass to do - maybe that hot pickups works... gotta take it with a grain of salt in other words.


If you're really about old school. Chris Hilman, Danko, Duck, Harvey Brooks, et al ... then for the most part you want the sweetness though... Speaking of sweetness. Last night I was playing my 'fish through a Princeton Reverb... just the combo, no extension cab. Volume down low Treble on 6, bass on 6 a smidge of Fender 'verb. Man - that's a tone...

MFD 'buckers and the DS of course ...

On the topic of active Reverends, I got pretty close to dropping an Audere into the white one I sold off - couldn't do the battery box mod to it ... for the most part I have no second thoughts about modding and taking the router to a piece of wood - I get sentimental over formica ? I need help...

Active basses - in general sound overstated to me. I'm getting great results from a Tribbie L2K recording at the moment - in passive mode...

oh yeah - 52 goin' on 22 over here. Bart - you're just a pup ... and what draws us old timers in ? It's the George Jetson meets Buddy Holly look. It's the neck that sinks the hook firmly though... the bass as bass-lure heh, heh

hmmm Bass'allure - it hooks yo' fish 'n filets it too! somebody ought get working on that one ...

Good choice. I didn't want to have to catch you sneaking around outside my house some day when you had finally come to your senses.

I'm 24, but I love Reverends. I miss my Fish, but desperate times called for desperate measures. I sold off 2 basses, traded one and sold 1 guitar in 2 weeks. I did get a killer acoustic guitar though that I love. Now I just need to learn how to play it.

Oh, and I have a shellelagh...Irish walking (fighting) staff. I'm just preparing for the future...

P.S. Tombowlus is looking for a Fish if anyone wants to trade him anything out of his rather meager collection of guitars and amps...

I also run 1.5 miles in 7:45, can hold my breath for 3 minutes, and have Black Belts in 3 styles of Martial Arts.
