I've got chromes on the PJ at present. I'm actually more of a fan of the TI flats, but we had the chromes in stock at the store, so that's what I got. SERIOUS thumpage. Can't say I'd recommend 'em over the TI's, but I do like 'em on the PJ.

I was never a fan of flats until I got my fish. Don't like them on the Jazz, hated them on my old Yamaha Broad Bass..but they are dead on nuts for the Reverend.
What's the concensus here on the board...is it me or was this rig made for flat wounds?

And yes, 'fish were made for flats, IMO. I didn't like them on my BH5, but I absolutely love the way they sound on my 5L. I liked the rounds on the 5L, but the bass just seemed to be made for flats. I'm keeping rounds on my PJ for contrast at the moment, but I think a set of flats may well end up on it as well.
I'm generally not a big fan of flatwounds either, but Rumblefish seem to work really well with them.

Me, as far as flats go, I'm a LaBella 760FL kinda guy.
LaBella 760's are of a tension that matches DA EXL 170's..a tension I like.
I find the TI's just too dang floppy for me.
Also, the LaBellas are stainless, and have a pretty pleasant, and present, high end.
And nice big thump.
But, to date, been a "rounds on fish" kinda guy...

I have several sets of LaBella 4's left.
One set of LaBella 5's, and DA Chrome 5's.
I also have 2 5L's handy now...

You really owe it to yourself to string up one of your 5Ls with flats, Chef.
It doesn't tame the bark, but rather makes it deeper and more substantial.
5L with flats + single coil mode makes for great big tone.

That's been my thinking, too. I tried a set of TI Jazz flats on my blue 'Fish once and I didn't dig it. But, now I'm reconsidering. I've got three 'Fish to work with, might as well mix it up. I think I'm gonna try some Chromes on one of 'em.

I had 1/2 rounds on my XL. I did like it. But it felt like having a Restrictive exhaust on a Hot Rod. I QUICKLY uncapped the Headers, and let the Fish Rev up to Redline with a set of 45 - 105 Slinky's! It puts the Rumble back in the RumbleFish!

I had DA chrome flats on my 5L before I sold it and I loved them. My white 4 string came w/ what I believe were TI flats and those were the best strings ever on a 'fish, IMO, I've just never ponyed up the cash for a new set. I've used fender, SIT & half-rounds. of those, I liked the SIT power flats. My mahoganny 4 string came w/ the stock reverend rounds (SIT I believe) and having a maple neck, they work well and I've stuck with them. So, 1 w/ flats 1 w/ rounds--although the flat strung fish gets 80% of the gigging time (blues band)

OK - that's better.
Chromes - kinda 'steely' not bad. Higher tension as we all know. The JF's are woody, more complex harmonically to my ear and they give me what I want from my PJ. I let setup decide which I use as some basses seem to thrive on high tension, some don't. My 'fish is just buttery with the JF's and that's tuned to Eb - I must have a lighter touch than I thought.
While it was mine - Bart's J was sportin' Super Alloy's - and far as I'm concerned - that is the round of choice 'cause you get booty AND zing ...
I just took off a set of DR Long Necks from a (non-Reverend) bass and replaced them with SA's - and the bass just sounds so much more full and complex.

LaBella call them light guage, and they are compared to the rest of their "flat line," but they're really medium...
hhmmmm, I could probably live with that guage. I like the sound of them being less tension. I'll try the chromes and see what I think.

Maybe it's the 35" scale, but I don't find TIs to be floppy on my 5L. They are pretty bright for flats, and that's really what you need -- I wouldn't string my fish with really old or dead flats; you won't get Jamerson but rather mud.
With a new set of TI flats though, the sound is great. Of course, it would be mighty nice if the TIs were a little cheaper.

La Bella Tape Wounds. I've used them on my BH5 since new and I'm on my second set now. Covers Jamerson - McCartney-Maby and you can even get some growl out of em too. Oh ya, and plenty of tension with no flop. Check em out.

You really need to try Sadowsky flats
The BH5 is a quite dark bass by its nature (electronics and pickup locations) and thus is ill suited to flats, IMO.
That being said, I'm not a big fan of the Sadowsky steels I just got for my Sadowskys. Next time, I'm going back to DR Hibeams.
