vol/blend/tone
pull vol for series

no need to mod the pickguard...pull the mini switch, put a pot there.
Worst case is you make the hole a lil bigger, mount the mini switch back with a bigger washer if you go back.
Or, buy another p/g from pickguardian...

Since I have several 5L's, I've been contemplating moving one of them to v/v/t...

Ah, but you see, I prefer v/v/t over v/b/t.

I am not sure. In all likelihood, though, I would want to use the pickups in parallel most of the time, and I'd like to have the control I get from a v/v setup. Series is a nice option, though, when the guitar player gets a little loud, and you need to really lay the hammer down.

I'm not sure either...I'm not the world's best soldering iron nor schematic jockey.
But, series turns the two individual single coils into one big humbucker.

I would think this would defeat blend in that instance.

I'd sure like to hear that JJ 4 with the wide spacing in XL modes.

I'm really happy with it as is, so I am not likely to change that one. You know, the only prudent thing to do would be to pick up a second JJ4 in v/v/t config.

Man, that pickup placement really does make these two basses sound very different! I'll have to hear the 5L in a mix to be sure, but I might consider getting another pickguard and making it a P/J. Does anyone know if you can relocate a pickup on a Fish without much additional routing?

Nice score, Tom! You're going to dig that one. I strongly recommend trying flats at some point -- for me, it's one of those rare basses that sounds just as good with flats or rounds. I usually have TI flats on mine, and it's just thick. The tone from single coils at that pickup location is INCREDIBLE.

As for doing it as a P/J, you would have to find just the right 5-string P pickup to do it; one that would blend well with the J pickup and sound good with the hollow body. I'd probably stick with it as is if it were me -- if it ain't broke . . .

FWIW, I'm a huge fan of the XL control layout. I don't really care for the sound of pickups out of balance (blended away from 50/50, or not matched volume), and the series switch is nice for boost. The Dawgfish is an XL and will stay that way.

The single coil mode on my early 5L is the bridge coil IIRC, which I believe is not standard setup (neck) but has a tremendous deep burp with flatwounds that brings a smile to my face.

3-position voicing switch: UP=both pickups in parallel, MID=neck pickup alone, DOWN=both pickups in series.

Which is why when I replaced the butchered electronics in mine I put a 4-way rotary in to give neck/series/parallel/bridge.

All 4 are useful tones IMO.

And there's some nice fish been showing up recently here...

You know, I was kinda thinking of hitting up either Pete Skjold or Sheldon Dingwall for one or two of those very rotary switches....

Mine's a Dingwall via ACG I believe.

Just be careful when you break off the un-needed mounting lug on the switch that you don't do what I did and damage the body so that when turned in one direction the ball-bearing that controls the click-stop pings out...

Luckily Alan was able to sell me a replacement and very kindly removed the lug more carefully for me first!

I may just have to rewire the Dawgfish XL with bridge only instead of neck only. I rarely use the single coil mode (neck) on the Dawgfish right now, but I use the bridge single coil on Thumpy (my 5L) all the time. Hmmmm.
