I put a set of Chromes on the PJ yesterday. Lookin' forward to hearing it roar tonight! Only thing is, I can't intonate a bass to save my life. All the 12th fret notes are sharp, especially the E, and things generally seem to be sharp on all strings from the 5th fret up. I moved the bridge saddles back. Still sharp. I'm not exactly using a pro-quality tuner, but still. Any ideas?

Press down on the strings right after the saddle to get a good witness point.
Compare 12th harmonic to 12th fretted. You can also compare harmonic vs fretted at 5th position.
Harmonic good, fretted sharp=move saddle back.

I would check it with a good tuner. When I first started doing setups with some help from a local pro, I couldn't believe how far I was off. Not knocking your ear or expertise but using a good tuner really opened my..........ears
He also used a special capo that would put the pressure, EXACTLY on all the strings on the 12th fret. He swore by this over actually fingering the strings. He said it removed all human error

Using a good tuner, see how accurately you can finger a note without the strobe moving

I do wish to congratulate TheLarch, who got the red XL, Chef, who snagged the Lava BH5, and vroc38, who grabbed the 5L.
I also wish to publicly state that while I will miss all three of them, the one that hurts the most is the 5L. I don't play fivers much, and had terrible GAS for a Rob Allen, so I sold it. I will regret having done that though. There was something just extra well dialed in about that particular bass, and the tone was incredible. If vroc38 sells it down the line, I call dibs.

5Ls are awesome instruments. I like my BH5, but IMO in regards to the tone and feel of my rockhide 5L it pales.

I do like the PJs, but the white one will be transformed into a JJ.
Two big questions though:
1) JJ or XL? XL requires more wiring change, but I like that three-way switch and rarely run Jazz-type basses' pickups at less than full. Series mode is cool. OTOH, if I make it a JJ, then I can have it switch out between JJ and PJ mode a lot easier by putting on quick connects. Switching between XL and PJ would require a lot of soldering. Then again, as I have the Lava PJ, I'll probably keep the white one as either a JJ or XL, and thus won't convert it back to a PJ.
2) What color pickguard? I've thought about b/w/b but I think I may have another w/b/w one made up instead. I don't think tort is the way to go.

If it were me, I'd go XL.
It can still be quick connect with a complete set of pots on a new pickguard.
I had a JJ 4 banger, and quite frankly, "Fenders did that better" for me.
The "magic" in a 5L is in the XL-ness, IMO.
I've always wanted to hear a JJ4-XL, because the pickup spacing is "more normal."

I had thought about that. I don't think there's anything particularly special about Reverend pots and such.
Yeah, but I like that 5L sound so much that I'd be curious to hear a 4-string XL with the same pickup spacing as the 5L.
I did like the sound of the Dawgfish. That's why I'm leaning towards XL. I might do the pickups like on my 5L though: with the single coil mode being the bridge pickup (not the neck pickup like on most 5Ls). Since it's slanted and slightly further from the bridge than on a regular Jazz, it's not as thin as on a Jazz, and I've never been a huge fan of the neck pickup soloed.

I know this really is an off topic thing, but I would love to have and play one of these basses. Unfortunately it seems that since they've been taken out of production, us guys paying less than 500 for an instrument are up a creek without a paddle.
