How did the tone change with the pickup replacement? What was your motivation for this change? I've never played a Mercalli and am very curious...

Curiosity mostly, I had the pickup laying around, and have always wanted to know what a p in the bridge would sound like as I have never been happy with a j bridge, sounds weak and thin compared to a p. Although this one had a mm4 type. It sounded good too, there was nothing wrong with it.
As far as sound change, the DG sound very good, but I think the EA ends up being too far back and sound a little less than I would like them to be, a bit anemic in terms of not having enough bass, but I EQ'ed back in. Not sure it sounds THAT much different than the neck pick up, it sounds less full and brighter, but the basic tonality is the same. I have other mm4's laying around. I will tey them next. A bartolini, and a lace sensor man o war. Hope this helps. By the way I have not tried it in a band context, yet.

Inneresting...come to think of it, I've never played any bass with a p style pickup in the bridge position either.

This gave me quite a panic. I JUST bought my fifth BH5 and am not prepared to shell-out another $1500 right now. Boy was I relieved to see that flamed maple finish! A carbon copy of the bass I received a week ago from @RevWood . Whew!

I saw that. How random that 2 out of the 4 flamed maple are up for sale in one month. I've never seen another one. Hope you are liking yours!
As @RevWood confirmed, those are the stock pick-ups. As of my exhaustive search a few years ago, no drop-in replacement pickups exist for this bass.
My favourite instrument builders combined in a single great instrument: Reverend Rumblefish R5L with a custom Nordstrand Big Split in the "neck" position.
This goes well with my other stock R5L.... and my Nordy basses
No routing was necessary, just a new pick guard..... no harm was done to the bass and the mod can be reversed without leaving any traces.

I have always been using the front PU on its own. So now with the Big Split, the sound is bigger, more reverse P-like with the added Reverend "quarter-hollowness"
One of these days I'm gonna get Billy Gibbons to sign my Reverend Rumblefish 5L. Then I'll have a Reverend signed by the Reverend! Of course I'll let Dusty and Frank sign it too.
I wanted to share with you guys a mod I did to my mercali 4, and one that should probably be included in the bass already. I installed a wilkinson Mj4 pickup in the bridge, its wired in parallel and if I back off the volume, tone, and pan a little off the bridge, it does a convincing single coil tone. I did change the volume pot to 250k because of the nordstrand neck pickup, and it helps cut some of the excessive highs of the bridge pickup.

Well then it sounds like the decision will suit you nicely. It's got a reverse P & J configuration. the neck is in 42 mm at the nut, although to me it feels more like a jazz since its thinner than a regular p. and the blend knob actually does something other than neck, mids, bridge. there are about another 3-4 tones in there besides those.
