My "330K" pots from my Bridge pup(volume and tone) both measured around 280K. There probably isn't a huge difference there between that and a 250K pot.

That being said, I swapped my bridge's tone pot for a no-load I made, and swapped my volume one for a 750K, but it will soon be swapped for a 10Meg one instead. I left the Neck pots stock, and typically only dial in that pickup about 25-30%.

That was an audible difference.


The original 4001's may used 500k pots.
 
Interesting. I'll go back and look and again as it has to be cleanest rewire that I have ever seen. Not doubting you, just really surprised. No extra solder anywhere, no scarred or marred insulation. No bent ends, etc. I need to meet whomever did this work. It's better than factory.

Well I guess it doesnt really matter how I handle as long as I stick with at minimum how it's wired now. Sounds fantastic.

Yeah, stock wiring doesn't have the pickups going to the volume pots first... plus the heat shrink looks different than what I usually see in guitar wiring. But if you like it why bother changing it? I say keep on doing like this guy: :bassist:
 
Sometimes a mystery wiring job can be a nice surprise. There's a story about Andy Summers picking up a guitar at a pawn shop, and the wiring and pickups were all fubar. But he played it as-is and never heard anything like it. So his signature tone was through a bit of luck, kismet, whatever you wish to call it.

Thanks man! It's been around the block and has a number of battle scars, but it still looks great. And plays like a dream - the whole "no relief" neck thing was a revelation to me a couple of years ago and made all the difference in the world. I also added the cap (and a mini toggle to switch it in/out), as it did not have one stock. Both things I learned here.
 
From the 60s untill 1989 Ricks had 250k ohm volume pots and 500k ohm tone pots. Then 1990 to about 2005 or 2006 they had all 250k ohm pots. Now they use all 330k ohm pots.

BTW ... old 70s 4001 basses sound really good with the .0047 capacitor removed and all 250k ohm pots and the original pickups. I wired several 70s 4001 basses this way and every single one had great tone.
 
What's the location of the online archive with a lot of "how to" Ric tips?

I'd like to adjust the neck and action on both my 2011 and 2011 4003's. i used to be more comfortable with pretty high action but now I'd like to dial them in. Both necks have slight relief so I want to flatten them and then trim the bridge for some lower action.

Just turn it (them) a quarter twist every day or so until the neck is flat. Easy peasy. If you don;t have the truss rod tool, you can order it from RIC or just get a similar one from a hardware store.

I noticed that when I swapped the stock strings for chromes on mine that I can get a significantly lower action at the bridge. Not sure if that is due to a tension change or the nature of flats v. rounds.
 
I usually just push the A and D strings aside to make it easier the get the TRC out of the way (take it completely off) then put the strings back in their slots; leave all the strings at normal tension when adjusting the rods.
 
No need to de-string or loosen them first or is that the "duh" question because it is the only way I'll get at the nuts? I ordered and recently received the adjustment wrench.
Without loosening the strings you are fighting against all that tension to turn the truss nuts. Simple physics, loosen the strings or "Help' The nuts but Gently "Pulling' back on the headstock.

Thanks Joe! (And he knows just how high the action is on my JetGlo! Lol). Might do that. Been stupid busy for over a month now so not much in the way of spare time but I'll keep the offer in mind.
