I have one of these Fireglo's from Wildwood on the way to me now. My first Ric and I can hardly wait! The price was the best I'd come across and included shipping. I'll post again with pics and ask for my number when it arrives.

Hey Jaymi! (I'm trying very hard to ignore the fact that I'm insanely jealous...)

You have indicated in previous posts that you are looking for something particular in your Rickenbackers, which is one of the reasons you have owned so many.

Could you describe what IT is you are looking for? And whatever IT is, do you think you will ever find IT?

Jaymi, those blackstars look like they're screaming to be played! You definitely have a taste for the awesome.

Greggster59, I think you'll love your new Fireglo. I've got a 2009 FG and it's beyond words. The sound is just as great as the finish. Just wish I didn't have to move soon cause that's two days I won't get to play it!

Yes, the standard measurement is tension in pounds or kilograms. The only fair way to really compare tension from two strings is to compare them at similar sets of gauges on the same scale length; most of the data out there is based on a 34'' scale, a 33.25'' scale will have slightly less tension and a 35'' scale will have slightly more. Etc.

This tension issue is part of the reason why I started putting single strings gauged 45-60-80-105 together to make my own sets... these gauges usually match well as far as tension. Circle K Strings has taken it a step further and offers lots of sets in balanced tension gauges as well as the traditional method where the D and G strings are much higher in tension, historically done to better suit the pickups of older Fenders. Rickenbacker strings have always been a little better balanced for whatever reason.

40 lbs per string is common. For reference, my 4001FL is unplayable with strings less than 37 or so lbs tension per string, such as TI JF344s. It gets crazy backbow that can't be fixed, because the truss rods are already so slack. I think that bass wants at least 45 lbs tension per string (fairly high) to get any relief in the neck at all.

Back in the day, Rotosounds were really high tension (approaching and exceeding 50 lbs regularly) while flats were fairly low. Today this is not the case for the average round or flat; they are lot more comparable in terms of tension, and usually, modern flats are actually a little higher than modern rounds.

@ iamthebassman : that's a nice collection you got there, congratulations! Is it me or your basses seems to be strung like a right handed? You did the Hendrix thing reversed (right-handed strings mount on a lefthand) or you play with your low E on the bottom?

Good observation! Judging from where his straps are attached, it looks like he plays with low E down.

Cassius, thank you for that response, but I worded it poorly to begin with. I already knew the measure for tension is expressed in weight -- what I was looking for was the possible existence of the spring-tension equivalent of nutrition labels on food, or a chart somewhere comparing different strings from different manufacturers.

It's one of those things that I feel as soon as I pick up the bass. I usually check them out acoustically first. Some speak much more than others. I have found that the ones that speak that way translate REALLY well into the amp and the groove.
