Maybe they were just trying to use up the left-over parts before phasing the 4001 out completely?
Hey! Nice one. I like when I see a newer Ric that dosent have that big fat oversized, almost deformed headstock like so many newer ones I've seen, Yours looks great! Congrats!
OR, you could just unwind the existing 12,600 ohm higains down to the 8,400 ohm higains the 70s Ricks had.
I do like the idea of a taller cover to bring the neck pup closer to the strings. Nice idea they had.
One tidbit I learned through conversing with Brad @ Classic Amplification is that along with variations in physical construction of the instruments, pickup magnets varied in strength. At one point, Ric was making them in-house with 'mixed' results. Brad states on his site that he is utilizing better magnets as well as a superior bobbin.

Mine is one of the infamous Musician's Friend MID sale Rics from summer 2011, but it's managed to survive and become my main instrument. It's a lovely thing with a lovely sound. Basically it has lived up to my expectations after years of desiring one. I've grown very comfortable with the body shape and the Treble Bezel helped alot with that. And the sound is so sweet it's hard to put it down.
I've since removed the p-up cover but otherwise she still looks like this pic from the day of arrival:
