Did those 73s spend the last 24 years under a bed or in a fireproof vault? The condition is exquisite! Beautiful.
Oh really, eh?? I don't think I could cut my beautiful bass up like that. I have the cover off for now...but, it may end up back on there at some point...I find it looks so much better with it on...but, it plays better with it off...such tough decisions in life, eh?
Here is my '87 4003, with the thinnest neck I have ever played. It's been updated with as much black as possible (Pickguardian guard, pickup surround & vintage knobs, hipshot bridge & tuners, and I swapped my TRC for this black w/ chrome baby)....
Except for the original white w/ black TRC, I have all of the original parts to get back to stock, but I love it blacked out and the Hipshot bridge is killer!

Here's another shot of my '87, before it was totally blacked out. It's pictured with my 75th Anniversary 4005, which was pretty cool but had a much chunkier neck that I did not like. So I decided to sell it. I made a nice profit, and bought 3 basses to replace it (Alembic Essence, Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Fretless, Epiphone El Capitan Acoustic/Electric bass).....
So the '87 is still a favorite player, and maybe I'll get another new 4003 in a few years, when they have definitely switched back to the thinner neck profile.

I did not realize that Hipshot offered that bridge in black. Hmm... I wonder if it's too late to change my order....

I hate being such a Ric noob, but can someone explain to me all of the differences between the 4001, 4003, and 4005 (I see how the 4004 is different)? I know that the neck changed a bit going from the 4001 to the 4003, but that is about it. I know at some point in time they stopped using the horseshoe, but I thought I had seen 4001's with both bridge pickups. And which models had the toaster neck pickup? I seem to recall seeing both style of neck pickups on different models.
Again, sorry to be so naive about Rickenbackers. I really have no valid excuse for my ignorance, but at least I am trying to improve myself!

This is my '07 4003. Made in March this year.. She's a cutie. Pretty slim neck and vintage tone pull pot are a plus. I added the vintage knobs, a Toaster in the neck and some La Bella Flats. Its perfect! I'm in love. <3

I suppose you could get the truss rods from Rickenbacker. They have an online store for parts, that is on their website. Not sure about prices...

I was aware of most of this, but the changes in pickups, neck thickness, etc. is what I am trying to sort out.
And what about the 4005?
Edit: Ah, wait, the 4005 appears to be the hollowbody. So, Squirefan, is that a 4003 in your picture, and not a 4005?
2nd Edit: Wait! As I read more, there was a non-hollowbody 4005, as well? Man, this is confusing....
Yeah, mine is a 4003. The 4005 is a beautiful bass. The body is alot bigger than the 4003. I hope I can try one out someday. They go for big bucks. I think one went on eBay a few weeks ago for around $5700. I think they stopped making the 4005 around 1980.
I forgot to mention that I added the push/pull pot mod to my 4003. I ended up liking it the way it was and don't really use the vintage sound (less deep end) option in the electronics.
Panda, can you compare your neck to other recent year 4003s? I have been interested to see about the necks they are shipping now. I think that by next year they will have used up all of the chunkier necks and just use the slimmer design (according to John Hall anyways).
I think the best thing about the 4003 over 4001 is the stronger neck due to the dual truss rods. They say it can handle higher tension strings much better than the 4001 could.
I do love my collection (I play thorugh an Ampeg B200R) and think it's pretty well balanced. If I could get more (patience SquireFan patience!) , I'd get a 5-string American Jazz or Ibanez SRX series 5-string, and a hollow body of some sort (maybe Epiphone). The El Capitan is alot of fun to play, and nice to be able to just pick it up anywhere and not have to plug in.
