The Rickenmodder Club

Damn, Ric5's got the right idea. When browsing the first page I thought, "If I had a Ric, I'd sand it down and probably round off the edges a little."

Then I go to the second page and see "It was sanded down and the edges rounded a little more than the average 's' model." BEAUTIFUL. Best Ric I've seen so far.

Thanks ... That bass feels good with the rounded edges. Sorta like the 4004 basses. It would be so cool if Rickenbacker made a 4003s5 with a slightly wider neck and wider pickups.

High input impedance is required to make all passive basses sound good--it's the preamp part of your amp that buffers the signal before it gets to the power amp. It should be around 1 megohm or so. Keyboards, active basses, etc. are buffered to be low impedance from the outset.

The 0.0047 uF cap will make the treble pickup sound really nasal if you go into a low input impedance. Into a good preamp it actually sounds surprisingly good even soloed. If you run both pickups together with high input impedance the result is that you hear both pickups without any filtering between the two, and it's a totally different sound from the cap bypassed with both pickups on where the treble pickup is putting more bass out but the two pickups filter each other and scoop the sound.

Anyone remember this?

I finally got all the stuff I needed, dove in head-first, and promptly sank like a rock! I managed OK, but it was learn-as-you-go, and I took a lot of time in order to not screw anything up. (That strategy didn't work, btw, I still screwed a bunch of things up.) But I finally got it functional again! It's still not finished -- I have to tweak the controls, and I want to swap out the Rickenbacker name plate, but the main effect has been achieved. (Whew!)

There are two Seymour Duncan Bassline P-bass pups and a Carvin humbucking J, with a volume control for each. Hipshot bridge, DR Black Beauties, Schaller tuners, Schaller straplocks. The pick-guard turned out pretty damn good, if I do say so myself. It really grabs the ambient light, and seems to both shimmer and glow. I got a few pictures to try and show the effect -- the camera gets it OK, but not great.

I still want a number for this club! This bass is supposed to be my ticket in.

If you have a Maple-glo, could you, in theory, take some sort of paint/color and paint it the Burgundy-glo color? What would you have to do in order to paint it (Removing the finish, etc.)

And does anyone know of a brand of paint/color to use on the Rickenbacker to make it the Burgundy-glo?

(Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this, but I figured since this *is* a Ricky modding thread, it would be the best place to ask it...)

*EDIT* Also, has anyone here tried using putting Gibson Mudbuckers and a Seymour Duncan J pickups, and a strat pickup in place of the mute (à la Cliff Burton)?

Thanks in advance...

wow i almost lost my breathe

I disagree a bass should actually have bass ...

The cap doesn't remove bass from the signal, just the treble pickup. It keeps the pickups from interacting so there's no filtering--the difference with the cap in or out with both pickups on is huge and it has very little to do with the bass removal. You could increase the cap size and get a similar effect.
