The Rickenmodder Club

Not if you saw it. It has always been scarred, like something had bent it a little somehow. I found out when I removed it, that the effect was from the glue used to hold the aluminum foil shielding in place. That, plus the fact that is was plain black with no remarkable visual properties, an re-using it was a non-starter.

Now, I could have made a black replacement that would have looked much better than the original (to me), and I do like black. I just thought it would have been too much with the black pickups and hardware.

And thanks!

Here's mine. 1974 4001R Backinblacker

More custom DIY than extreme mods: tuners, mount, bezel, guard, screws, shielded, chrome black, cap-bypassed.

I have tried to put this photo on,hope it works.
I have a 1999 4003.
I,ve had this from new.
I have since fitted a hipshot bridge, black scratchplate and installed the vintage push/pull circuit .
I think i,ve modified everything I want to do on this bass.
It is just perfect for me now.
Just goes to show that you don,t have to do much with them.

Well, I bought a preamp from SGD last week that is modeled after a 1976 Stingray 2-band pre and put it in my 4003FL, that I have modded already to be a "4000FL" with a 4002 bridge pickup. The 2-band pre has replaced the volume-tone circuit I soldered for it previously. The difference in tone with the EQ flat is not huge although there may be a little more fidelity. The main difference is, the EQ is super musical-sounding and can be used to craft some sweet tones. For my gig last night I just dimed both of the EQs and ran it like that the whole night, and people were raving to me about the "full-range sound". OTOH I quite enjoy boosting the bass a bit and setting the treble flat for a slightly fat sound. I'm really impressed, and I think the preamp is here to stay. David says the battery should last 6 months or so.

Advice welcomed:
I want to replace my very low output neck p'up (dying?). Some options:
1) Bill Lawrence EB-50PB,
2) Thunderbucker '66 (I'd like the throaty deepness of a TBird up there...)
3) Darkstar

Those who've dropped a single coil in the string dampener position: what's it like picking up so close to the saddles?
Thanks amigos.

I've used an Artec violin Bass replacement humbucker.
Much nicer than the original.
Same mount spacing, but squarer so you'll have to enlarge the pickguard cutout a tad.
Right now I have a HB1 Ric humbucker installed.

Another option for the neck pups is to have it rewound.
Check out the RickResource forum and look for Sergio from Portugal.
He can wind it to stock specs, hotter, scatterwound like a toaster, whatever you like.

I had my '77 4001 neck pup rewound by him to stock mid 1970s spec and it sounds great.

You could also buy a RIC replacement Higain or Toaster.
Seymour Duncan and Bartolini as well as a couple of other companies make direct replacements also, which won't require extra routing.

Thanks kcole. I should have had that as my 4th option... yes I have a local guy here who can rewind it to stock or custom spec. Probably my best option!
Question: does the magnate ever loose its magnetism over time? Other factors could ruin it I suppose, so this is probably a dumb question...
Well if it does, rewinding wouldn't improve the p'up. So a magnate test would be the place to start.

That would be my choice, but it's your bass.
However, the current production Higain found on the 4003 (with the adjustable poles) has a very nice throaty mid-present voicing.

On another note, I believe the pup in Ric5's bass' mute cavity is a SD Quarter Pounder.
He has done a few of these mods.
I believe the mounting ears have to be shaved to fit in there, but I'm not 100% sure of that.
