Not really modded per se, just blacked out. =)

I recently sold the bass, but returned it to factory chrome pieces before shipping it out. Waiting for the next 4003 JetGlo or even Midnight Blue to strike my fancy so I can black it out.

I never knew so many people actually dared do this to a Ric. Now that I see... Wow.

Great work, guys, the lot of you have really done amazing stuff to an already amazing bass. It's not a Holy Grail, it's an instrument to be customized however you like - and the stuff here's really awesome, some of it (like Ric5s work) ought to be factory default.

Hope I can join this club one day... are clones at least semi-allowed?

yeah. i saw that one yesterday. it's actually kind of a rare one since it has black binding on the body, but white binding on the neck. it looks like it was a white one at some point in it's life.
i've only seen a few of them like that before.

All 4001 basses had necks with white trim. Even the ones with black body binding. All 4003 basses with black body binding also had black neck binding.

All "S" models don't have neck binding.

Hi, J Hud. I really like what you've done with your Rick. In 1981 I had the stock bridge on my '76 4001 replaced with one of the original style Badass bridges, ala Geddy Lee.

Through the years I had the stock pickups replaced with the Seymour Duncan direct replacement set; later on I replaced those with a direct replacement set of Bartolini's. About the only modification I regret doing is replacing the stock tuning gears with a set of Schallers, which made the bass a bit neck heavy. Hopefully I can replace them with a set of Hipshot Ultralights when I have the funds.

Putting a set of stock Rick pickups to get it's "signature" sound back is also on my "To Do" list.

I really dug the pictures you posted while you were making your mods. It certainly looks like you've got some great skills.

Best regards, Derwin

Thanks Derwin for the kind words! I really liked the way the Ric and am thinking I want to track down a nice used 4000 and go with the Bart MM pup and a conversion to Fless next :)
