While certainly not British, what about Ken Lawrence? His creations certainly deserve to be mentioned in the same breath with Carl Thompson, Fodera, Wal, Ritter, Alembic, and Status. C'mon people!

Last Saturday Suzzy Quatro said on BBC radio that the 1957 Fender Precision her father gave her was "the Rolls Royce of basses". Well, I thought a very great bass, but not a Rolls Royce, more of a Massey Fergusson (American readers may prefer John Deere).

This set me thinking, what bass would qualify as a Rolls Royce? My nomination would be a Status Series-3, but I would love to know what is your absolute luxury bass?

One bassist I admire explained that he has two types of basses - sports cars and taxi cabs. The sports cars are great, fun, exciting... but they never leave the house. He does, however, earn a living with his taxi cabs.

Yeah, I can relate to that. I had a really, really nice bass that I was afraid to use. In a few years I let her go.

Rolls Royce is owned by Volkwagen, a German company, so I'd have to say the Roll Royce of basses could very well be Hofner.

Actually, Rolls Royce is owned by BMW.

Bentley is owned by VW. Along with Audi, Porsche, Bugatti,and Lamborghini.
