Hmm that thing seems like an extended range baritone guitar with those string gauges and scale length. But it's cool to see some new unusual and interesting instruments in the Rondo lineup...

Now where's the 30" - 30.5" 6-string boomer--for a LOT less than the price of this 8, or a Hellcat VI, which, as I understand it, does not require replacement pickups or hardware. (Although another switch-pot in the volume position rigged with a capacitor/high-pass filter/'strangle-switch' would be useful for better nailing a baritone tone.)
I really hope Rondo brings to market a proper 30" scale Bass VI.

I think that's the story with a lot of them. Fender just didn't get the details right. Mine just barely intonates on the low E but if I slip up even slightly and put side pressure on it it still ends up sharp. I found a 1" bridge for my upcoming VI so hopefully I'll be ready to deal with any intonation issues.

Can't see it being tunes as anything but a Baritone, the heaviest guage there would be too floppy tuned down to low E.

FWIW, I much prefer the sound of your Barracuda to your Hellcat. It's hard to describe sound with words, but the Barracuda seems to have much more richness, depth and bite in its tone. The Hellcat seems kind of "flat" by comparison.

The Barracuda has single-coil Burns Tri-Sonic pickups, they are one of the best pickups in the world IMO. They remind me of P90s in that they are single coil but they sound bigger than typical single coils.
I really think that if one were to swap out the stock pickups of the Hellcat with much brighter humbuckers, it would make a world of difference. It's those high frequencies that add the real detail to the tone.
I should do an A/B recording of the Hellcat vs. the Barracuda in the same setting. The recording I posted in this thread was with my band and in a different environment.

I am just curious, do most Piccolo Basses use special pickups or can I use normal guitar pickups?
Short-scale basses with six strings are hardly standard and I doubt they use 6-string Bass pickups.
The Hellcat and the the Burns Barracuda both use guitar pickups as well.
I believe he was asking about a piccolo bass as in a 4 string, 34" scale bass. A piccolo version of a Bass VI would indeed use guitar pickups because it would be a guitar.

These were the pickups being used in 1962 for the Burns 6 String Bass, just think all this and split sound as well.
Just finished packing this baby then it's off to France on Monday.
