Hey, someone on the FB Cat VI group asked if anybody had done a pup switchout/upgrade on a Cat. If you have or have an opinion about it could you go on and answer their question? Would be some good insight for all of us.....

I recently got a few sets of the La Bella Hellcat strings (nickels and flats) to try on my Jerry Jones Bass 6. I'm not sure if anyone has tried this yet, but I can confirm that they fit perfectly on the JJ.

The La Bella's sound and feel better than anything I've tried before. So much better than D'Addario XL155's. And so much cheaper than the hodgepodge of short-scale bass strings and baritone strings I used to use to get the same gauges as the La Bella sets.

I've got the nickels on now - I can't wait to try the flats out!

This is good to know! The Danelectro bass VI family has a new string option!

so my agile arrived yesterday. came strung with guitar strings, which was annoying cuz i had nothing to re-string it with. picked up some short scale bass strings at GC and moved the D and G strings down to B and e. also had to do some nut filing, and will probably have to do some more cuz it's not quite deep enough.

overall though the guitar is pretty sweet.

Yeah this is unfortunately how they come from the factory...same as the 8 strings that also should come with heavier strings.. Don't ask me why, or why Kurt won't put a disclaimer on the site so at least people expect that. That is rather annoying, but I guess that's the price you pay...or could pay $200 more for a Schecter and it's setup out of the box.

My Argus was the same. Rest assured when you've got it set up it makes the hassle worthwhile.

There's no specific way to EQ a bass VI... Just as you might EQ two regular 4 string basses differently because of how they sound, every bass VI might call for a different EQ. Lately I've been keeping my bass amp EQ flat, and just using my VT Bass pedal for adjustments, because the pedal is so sensitive to the differences between basses that it requires tweaking when I switch from one to another.

I know that when I use the neck + bridge pickup combination on my Barracuda, I need to boost the lows a bit because the thinness of the bridge pickup kills some of the lows. I think I could minimize this issue if I could get the pickup a little closer to the strings, but right now the height is maxed out. I also think if it had a parallel/series switch, I could get more lows out of it by switching to series....

My amp doesn't boost, it only cuts...and when I'm recording I will use different mics to get different sounds, so your mileage may vary.

If I'm using it as a deep guitar I typically cut a lot of bass out, and some low mids so that it doesn't take over a mix and drown out bass and drums. It's very easily for this kind of guitar to dominate the mix.

If I'm using it as a bass I leave it flat and cut some mids so it fits with guitar.
