I sent another email to Ibanez on Thursday evening for a quote on a pre amp and a fretless SR4 neck, and hope to hear something Tuesday after the holidays. They're usually pretty quick. I'll post the quote as soon as it comes in.

Is it worth it to upgrade to upgrade the pups from the old style? Or is the preamp te weak link? or both?

Thought about either trading my SR 305 for a 605 or just upgrading the electronics. My 305 is perfect except the pups could have a bit more bite. So I just don't know if trading it in is the right answer!

What do you guys think?

I think I would be tempted to upgrade the pups before I would trade it. Especially if it is a great player otherwise.

I don't bother with the classifieds here for that reason. So I order stuff like that from Best Bass Gear. They are happy to ship to Canada. The big question is do they have what you want. They won't have Ibanez parts, which as you learned, is stupid expensive here. They do have some great alternatives. Maybe look more at that.

It's a bit of a challenge to determine exactly what part of the sound is coming from the pups and what is coming from the pre and what is coming from everything else.
My tech guy says that if you have an active bass you can get a general idea of what the pre is adding by setting the bass eq totally flat. That takes a lot of the pre's contribution to the tone out of the loop (although perhaps not 100%).

It's a shame, especially since the last time I checked, our currency was still legal and usually worth more than theirs:rollno:

Must be the whole customs thing that is screwing us over because why would people and businesses not want to sell their goods and services to others based on an imaginary line??

That's a whole other discussion that I have strong opinions on. :)

I was thinking that a set of Nordstrand Big Singles or Fat Stacks with one of his preamps would be great on that bass of yours. I guess it boils down to how much you want to spend and what tone you are after.

I guess kinda a jazz bass tone. I have always been a Fender Jazz guy, but over the years and few injuries later, I have finally discovered that after spending I don't know how much on basses that the Ibanez just works for me. The weight, comfort and the ergonomics of these basses are perfect for me. I am just not crazy about the electronics on the style sweeper versions of the SR 300 to 400.

However I am on a tight budget. I have found that my 750 and the Zoom B3 gives me almost everything I am looking for but the B string. As a side note I am planning on selling my Fender P and Squier J just because I just find them heavy and bulky in comparison. However I do love the Fender tone and would love to get some 62 Jazz bass electronics in a SR body, that would be sweet. Along with the same idea for P bass electronics in an SR

Sounds like we have a few things in common. I also love Fenders but after some injuries I have also found that Ibanez is better ergonomically. I love how my Premium is Jazz sounding. However I think you could get close to a Jazz-like sound using those basses as a modding platform. It just won't be overly authentic.

I'll be able to tell you soon. I'm upgrading the pickups on my older 370M to the newer CAP pups. The newer CAP pups on my 300M definitely have more bite, while still being flexible, ie. not constrained to a darker HB tone nor a bright single coil tone, but able to approximate both. I'm leaving the preamp stock. My tech looked at the schematics and listened to both pups and thinks the pickups will make the biggest difference. I just won't have a mid pot on the 370, but I don't use it anyway. I just boost the low and high for slap.

Nice Tone! :)

I love the chameleon aspect of the SR series. Strat Hater mentioned that it sounds more akin to a modern jazz and I do notice the beautiful top end sparkle in your audio clip too in a couple of spots (and I love that tone), but in a mix - between this and a standard jazz, I'd want this every time. And the top end can easily be rolled off further if that is the only giveaway.

Since I started playing SR's, I just can't seem to pick up my jazz basses any more, because I can dial up a little mids & roll back the treble to emulate more traditional j-bass or bring in just a *touch* of sparkle all the way to a full on modern jazz tone.

Plus with a humbucker at the neck position (with its wider aperture) gets me closer to a more authentic P-bass tone than a single coil j pickup does when I solo the neck pickup. People like to talk about SR series not having a signature "sound", but I think the signature *feature* of the SR series is having great pickups & electronics that enable you to sculpt some *very* desirable tones.

I'll put it this way - my SR-705 can emulate both a passive and a modern jazz bass very well. But a jazz bass could not begin to touch the range of tones of my SR-705. ;)
