Neh, it's not uncommon ;) Ibanez did / does a lot with 3 piece bodies as well, but for some guitars or basses that have a body without exotic wood top or painted (see through) finish, it looks nicer to have a 2 piece body :)

Like Mr. M was saying, its not uncommon but more often than not you see three piece bodies that are matched very nicely. The grain and the way those two pieces are put together, I think, make that a very special bass. Its absolutely gorgeous. If that was a 605 and weighed under 8 lbs, I'd pay an extra $100 to own that jewel.

Long story short, you got a good one any way you slice it.

Hi all - new member here. I'm looking at a SR800 (SR800JM in the ad) as a possible craigslist purchase. The seller doesn't seem to know much about the guitar and it is listed at a low price. It has stacked pots, AFR pups and is painted an odd shade of green. From reading posts to this and other Soundgear forums, I gather that some of these 800's had problems with the preamps, possible mid range "dullness". I plan to look at this guitar in the next couple of days and would appreciate any tips on problems to look for with electronics or the guitar itself. Thanks!

I don't know too much about the older SR models, but if the guy is local I'd go and see if you could try it out before buying it.

Gallo back again. I had a look at the SR800 - seems pretty decent. Needs a truss rod adjust and the 1/4" jack is worn out. Frets pretty good - some wear on the third fret under E. Also had a broken wire from the one of the pups to the volume pot - an easy fix (you can't help but wonder how long it was broken...).

Thing is, I don't even know if it is an SR800. There is only a serial number on the head - FS521069 No model number. Can anybody translate that serial number?

Also, the detent on one of the stepped pots does not seem to work, or, maybe there isn't one. It's the pot closest to the bridge, not sure what it does yet. The center knob has a detent, the outer knob does not. The second stepped pot has detents for both knobs. It seems like there should be detents on both - does one have detents and the other not?

Have pics of the bass? I'm interested in what it looks like...also kind of weird that they didn't fix the wire before selling it.

I'd also head on over to the Ibanez site/forum about the serial number.

And the non-detent pot sounds strange, but maybe it was just a replacement? On my SR600, albeit a newer model, the only pot that doesn't detent in the center is the volume. The others (pickup blend, bass, mid, treble) all detent.

That FS should have been an F521069.

So, I gather it was made in 1995. So, I should be able to figure out what it is from the archived catalogs - right? Well, not quite. The '95 catalog doesn't even offer a bass in this color (MJ - it's a dark black/green color), and due to the round fret inlays, it looks more like a SR500 (the 800 has oval inlays), but, it has the bridge of the 800. The 96 catalog show an SR800 in this color with the correct components, and the correct inlays, but, the serial number says it's a 95. The 96 SR500 does not come in this color and has the wrong bridge. Who knows...

Got the truss rod tightened and re-soldered the broken wire and everything seems to work. Still confused about the stacked pot near the bridge. I guess I need an instruction manual on how to use the vari-mid system. Where might I find such a thing? Ibanez only seems to have manuals to 2000 with three band equalizers.

So.... I'm really liking this new Ibanez, the way it plays and sounds anyway.

One problem - the ash body is so light that it's a bit neck heavy. Never thought I'd say that about a 4 string Ibanez, but here I am! It doesn't really dive as such because my leather strap is quite grippy underneath, but I can feel that it's top heavy with, and it puts pressure on my shoulder. The whole bass only weighs 7.2 lbs, but it feels like much more because of this.

I've had constant shoulder pain for the last couple of days, so I need to do something.

Would a neotech strap help, or would the material slip on my shirt and make it dive?

I use a Neotech Mega Bass strap. I know it seems a little silly with a light bass, but it grips just a little on your shirt. My CallowHill has the strap button higher than the usual spot. That sets the body a little to the right, helps with reach to the first frets, and eliminates neck dive.

I need to check my SR505 to see if this is an issue.

Congrats! I have it's little brother, the SR500. Same pickups and amp as yours, I believe, but yours has the nicer wood.

I had an SR1010 a few years back that I, unfortunately, was forced to sell. I would still love to get an SR1200 at some point. But I have to say that my SR500 holds its own pretty well, especially since I only gave 3 bills for it! I love the more exotic woods, but the neck on this and its playability are, to me, identical to the SR1010 and the SR1200s I've played in the stores. Good job, Ibanez!

Really love the look of the 700 series. But I can not get down with gold hardware. Just my narrow preferences. I'm going to BOLO for a SR705 used that is super light.

I played what looked like a SR705 at GC that had the cosmo black hardware but it was a little hefty. Played like a charm though and really wanted to take it home.
