I have a SR705 too (looks exactly like the one pictured above). I'ts by far the most brutal sounding SR I own (out of 6) and has the hottest signal. I don't know what the issue with yours is, but it doesn't sound right. For the record, SRs have very hot output, maybe the preamps are not everyone's cup of tea, but weak is not the term I'd use to describe 'em - quite the opposite.

After the A/B test with the SR305 i am sure that my SR705 is healthy.The 705 is more powerful.Witch 705 you have?Mine is a 1P05 model and the SR305 was 1P04.Maybe is there a difference between year models?Don't now.
If you ever have a active Yamaha in your hands,make a comparison A/B test with your 705.

The 30X models sound a bit thinner than the higher models due to the electronics. I've A/B-ed a couple of older models and although I liked their sound, compared to a SR50X for ex they are a bit on the shy side :)

My 705 is a 2007 model. There are subtle differences between the models depending on the manufacturing year: the older models (up to 2007) have a tad thicker neck and chunkier bodies. They also have a wenge/bubinga neck combo. Then they've changed the neck combo to jatoba/bubinga (as opposed to the "always dry" wenge jatoba feels a bit oily, like it's waxed all the time) and they've started shaving the body (if you look at the upper horn now it has an almost triangular shape, like a shark fin, the older model have rounder horns). The models with the thinnest neck & body front to back are the ones made in 2009 (my favs). Then starting with 2010 the neck was "thickened" a bit again. Also in 2009 they've changed the preamps and added the mid switch, but overall the sound is brighter now. I know the specs on paper are the same, but in reality there are differences that become noticeable once you start switching between them.

One more (weird) thing regarding the 705 model: for some (strange) reason sometimes the body wings don't match (the grain looks different) so if someone wants to buy one, I suggest to go & see the bass in person as opposed to buying online. Also the figuring varies a lot (some are highly figured like yours and mine, others have almost no figuring).

PS: mine has also an interesting finish :) I don't know why ('cause probably all the figuring is either a veneer sheet or just blowtorched), but the clear coat is wavy over those figuring lines :) You don't see it with the naked eye, but it can be felt at touch :) Makes it special ;)

Found a really nice way to compensate for the output.I just rise all the EQ controls equal amount and voila,the db is there :smug:.

Well duh :) I don't know why ppl are reluctant to use the onboard eq :) It's there to be used ;) My setting are always the same: volume max, both pickups in the middle, bass all the way up, mids halfway, treble almost all the way up (I back them up a little - just enough to avoid that hashness and hissy top). I do however play with a pick and that adds to the overall tone ;)

That's really nice - is it the trans grey color?

I got one last year in the charcoal color (red) & I really love the sound, and the neck is pure perfection. The flip open truss rod cover is a nice touch - makes adjustments easier.

It really came to life after I put D'Add Prosteels on it.

The Charcoal was not available in Europe:banghead:.I like it more than mine:(.The color is Transparent Black according to Ibanez.;)
I really liked the Elixirs,and i am Ernie Ball guy :D.

Heh, glad to be back ;)

I know on paper the specs remained the same, but you can really feel all these little differences when you play them. They're subtle, but real :)



@TitaniumRx: Ibanez and their weird colours ;) Real basses almost never match the colours displayed in promo pics ;) Even within the same models there are differences - it's like the folks in charge of the spray guns can't make up their mind :)
