i wonder what it's like to work at ibanez answering peoples' "what is my bass" questions. the database they have must be amazing.
Just got the chromes in. Holy smokes, what a difference. I was starting to regret my decision with the zippy rounds they had on there. The chromes are deeeep, easy to play, but still sound great with a pick and slap (not that I ever slap). Thanks for the recommendation.

To piggyback on this conversation, I'm exactly in the same spot. A Sweetwater special SR1305 vs a blue (preowned, like new) sr1405. Both would cost around the same. Love the blue but would the matte finish scratch or get that nasty finger shine easy?

Found this SR655PB on Reverb this evening and jumped on it (since the price was right!):
This has been on my G.A.S. list for a while. I plan on swapping out the gold hardware for black and upgrading the electronics.

Well I've installed a lot of preamps and pickup systems over the years, cause of our lack of technicians in my country (I live in Greenland), so I have seen a lot of insides on basses. But I would first of all say that the NOLL preamp was very easy to install and was very well made. Klaus Noll does most of the Work for you, before he ships out the preamp and the customer service from his side is just spot on. He is the only one that answers you and he ships out very quickly.
The stock Electronics in the ibanez was allright. It seemed like cheaply made asian Electronics and that kinda came through in the sound also. (Just my opinion) On the other hand, the Nordstrand big single pickups are very nicely made and they have a very good sound, just a bit bummed about the preamp kinda ruining it for the pickups.
I do plan on using the Nordstrand pickups for a SR300 model if they decide to change the new import rules on rosewood.
But the playability on the bass is just fantastic and the way the bass is made is just really good, so an upgrade on the Electronics is minor
My NOLL preamp is a 4 band and by some reason he really has some really good low prices for his preamps, compared to preamps like the flexcore and John East. (Cost twice as much)

A green bass in Greenland!

Interesting. I'm going to look into the NOLL, I have two problems with the bass's stock electronics, 1. I wish the passive tone control's cutoff was lower, so that I can roll off right down to the fundamental. My best guess is that the stock electronics rolls off at around 450hz. And I think there's a bid of a dip in the upper mids, in general, so I like the idea of having 2 mid controls. Also ,How did you configured the two toggles on the bass with your setup? still a mid switch?

That poplar burl is just really beautiful. Always wanted at least one bass in my arsenal to be with a burl of some kind!
What better than a SR with a burl
Can't say enough good stuff about the NOLL. The cool thing about it is that the preamp goes on a 9 volt battery, which is much appreciated with the limited space in the cavity, when the old preamp only ran on a 9 volt also.
And yeah it's nice to be able to shift between the 2 mids. (High and low).
And my volume is stacked with a passive tone control, which enables you to get an even wider sound spectrum from the pickups.
At the moment I only have 1 switch, which is an active/passive switch. It was meant to have another switch for coil tapping, but the super doubles isn't able to be switched as they are wired in series. (I originally wanted parallel wired Nordstrands)
But man is it an awesome combination of preamp and pickups. It gave me exactly the sound I wanted.

Definitely ditch the stock mk1 preamp, it sounds like a cardboard box! I'm still deciding on one for mine.
