I ALWAYS compare new acquisitions to my SR1800E & so far they've all failed. Ironically the GSR100EX comes closer than a lot of other stuff:

I've got a 2016 SR750
And an MIJ 92 SR885
it's a bit beat up but it sounds pretty okay...preamp seems a bit weak some I'm thinking about replacing it soon

Is the J pickup on your SR750 pretty noisy? The one on my SR650 is, and it's kind of a bummer. I'm thinking about swapping it out with a Big Split replacement, but I might just sell the bass when the new EHB models come out--depending how the headless necks feel and the tonal possibilities.
It's not too bad, but I usually run it blended. The pups are really bright though... almost to the point where it sounds a bit artificial and synth-y. Sounds kind of weird practicing but it ends up really helping the sound pop in a mix.
does the 650 use the same CND pups?
I put the Big Split in my 755 and I love the sound of it. A bit more aggressive and a bit darker than the single coil but not massively, it just seems to add power and depth. A really good mod in my opinion.
I have the SR 750 as well. Never noticed any noise from the bridge pickup, so I plugged it in to see. At low practice volume, there's no noticeable noise. But when I turn it up, I can hear a bit of a hum. And, it's definitely affected by the treble control in active mode and the tone (treble) knob in passive mode. It's not enough for me to be concerned about on my particular bass.
The level of Gain you're working with is a large contributor to noise, so I have discovered in the past. I play with the Gain high enough for Motörhead levels of distortion & it makes everything noisier.
Folks who play with the Gain low hardly ever notice noise & those who play with the treble rolled back should never notice.

I still own my 1992 Ibanez SR885. I always received compliments both in live performances and recordings. It's a great instrument!
So the fiver is returned.
And I ordered a 4 string SR300 in the same weathered black. I'll use that for the high note songs as those couple extra frets do make live easier.
And I just want it for the looks and it'll make an awesome crummy dive axe.
Recently fallen back in love with my 2002 SR300DX. It's a nice thumpy counterpart to my SR505 and SR506, which seem a little more hihfi and certainly lighter. Thinking of picking up another similar bass, but 5 string. Suggestions? Mind you, I don't NEED this by any stretch, so it would need to be a good deal, but still a solid bass. Likely $250ish or so.
I don't know what accounts for the "thump" of this bass, but it certainly feels and sounds different than my others.
I play mostly metal, but would like something that just sounds good in general, as I think all my basses sound great by themselves. I would use various dirt as well.

Variety is the spice of life? Actually, I did, but the 305s I found weren't the same pickup configuration. They had 2 soap bars, and my current 300 was a P/J combo. Also, didn't like the colors I found. I'll keep looking of course.
There is also a brand new 2020 Ibanez Mezzo 5 string PJ and a new this year 5 string talman PJ.
5 string PJ basses are not common. Ibanez make most of them it seems
Same thoughts about my 885. I had an SR1200 from the same era that came to me with the passive pickups and electronics out of an old SR800. Sounded fantastic. I wonder about going passive with my 885... since that is really my sound anyway.

yeah it seems like the preamp in those models was kind of anemic. I've got my eye on an EMG BQC 4 knob replacement but it also costs more than I paid for the bass
I have something meant as a replacement for a Carvin long ago that wound up still in a ziplock in a drawer. The Carvin continued its voyage.
