I just uploaded a bass cover with the SR650:


As much as I like the bass, I'm replacing it with the EHB1000 because I'm trying to go headless as much as possible with all my basses. Also, a little tired of the single-coil hum noise, and I don't want to spend money on replacing it with the Nordstrand Big Single. It's also a little heavy (I prefer under 8 lbs. Mine's 9 lbs.)

I've never been happy with the sound of my SR506 - just too much high end that I can't seem to get rid of, whether with onboard or external EQ. But the other day I pulled out my old Octavius Squeezer to mess around (actually planned to sell it but I'm going to keep it, there's some things wrong with it) and found that the SR506 is a great trigger for it! I love the neck (it's an older MIK one with the wenge/bubinga neck), it's a fun bass to play. Also been experimenting with video, thought I would share here - the audio is from ProTools which you can see running on my laptop.



Here's an audio-only clip of this pair too, but a couple of different patches (all of them presets - it's a long story) - the beginning is actually the noise of just touching the plug before plugging it in, then you can hear actual notes.

If you're handy with a soldering iron you could try adding a capacitor in parallel, from the pre-amp input to ground.
This is why newer iterations have a passive treble-cut when switched to Passive:

or you could try to get the Pre-Amp of a SR500E & install it in your SR506

Very cool! I used to have that pedal but could never get it to work the way I wanted consistently

I'm not handy with a soldering iron unfortunately. My dad showed me when I was a kid but I never dove into it. Regret that now.

Mine doesn't even have a passive mode (as far as I know) - would be interested to hear the pickups run passive...

Thanks! Yeah, I had big ideas when I bought it and they all fell flat! It's been sitting on the shelf for years. But when I dusted it off, I remembered why I got it in the first place and decided to hang on to it and enjoy it for what it is (which is minus half the presets - I'm one of those who deleted the presets by accident and couldn't get all of them loaded back on, even with help from the Chunk Systems guy)

It's the 25th anniversary premium 5-string. It has a padouk top instead of whatever else they were using.

And about those flatwounds. I like these Labellas - the B is similar to the E and A - but I think I'm going to take the plunge and fork over the $110 for the TI flats. I'm putting them on and never taking them off again anyway.

This is my favorite pickup electronics configuration. Unfortunately my Ibby's don't have the 3 way mid frequency switch. I've found less than three tone controls is not enough--even when I mostly use them flat.

Aren't the Prestige runs generally limited anyway? The SRFF4505 gave way to the SRFF805 and the newer headless fanned frets, which are all 35.5 - 34" (i.e. 'half-fanned' compared to 37-34"). Similar materials also. The SRFF4505 has Nordy Big Singles, however, which are my favorite (compared to Barts or Big Splits in the other two). I didn't like the preamp in mine, which was always on, and I replaced it with a Nordstrand with a pull-passive volume knob and a tone drop:

The Wenge neck and board are phenomenal, and the simple, oiled one-piece mahogany body is a great match for it.

Been there my friend. I own a 2009 pre mid switch SR505 and I despise it's sound. The problem lies in the preamp. Its shelving low and high so if you boost the lows you boost all the sub muddy unusable frequencies and if you boost the highs you boost all the ice picky sizzling highs. My solution was to turn the knobs completely off and only increment bass and treble a touch if needed. Everything else is done via my B7K or external EQ.

Not only is the signal less hot giving more headroom, the sound is much more balanced. I did this semi analytically by using Fab Filter Pro Q to see my spectrum and indeed, the mid content was almost 6 db lower than the bass and the highs. Rolling them off helped bring everything closer together and sounding more like the DI's I hear when watching mixing tutorials and such.

But indeed, the preamp on our particular models is complete garbage.

Welcome to TalkBass. I bought an SR 875 a few months ago--my first 5 string bass. It's a great instrument. You'll have a lot of fun with yours. It's a cool color too!
