I'm a believer in pups first, and don't worry too much about on-board preamps. You can try a dozen different preamps under your boot, another dozen VST preamp emulations, and when you finally pick the best of 24, you can probably find something similar to cram into your bass (e.g. if you like the sound of a trickfish minnow get a Pope). Get a preamp with an off switch. Its a little harder to try 24 pairs of pickups in your bass.

Mine is dead silent no matter what setting I use except the bridge pickup in single mode. It has a similar growl overall that my SR2605 has but in a more modern muffled way. Thanks for all your info, I don't want to hijack the thread.

Just a quick update on this (more later, with pics :) ):

I'm not sure I trust that, so once I get into the 885 (doing some...."tinkering" on the 1200 atm :unsure: ), I'll check again to verify the accuracy.

But it is really light, when I picked up the package from UPS, I was surprised. I was almost afraid it had fallen out of the box somewhere in shipping :nailbiting:
I actually carried it, box & all, out to my car just sorta tucked under one arm! :jawdrop:

I'm hoping I can salvage the electronics - I got it for a pretty decent price because it has wiring/electronics problems. It's had one of the pots replaced at some point, not sure yet what else, so I'll have to get in it & figure out what's going on.....but I like that sort of thing, it's why I bought this particular one :smug:




2nd weigh.... I couldn't lay it flat because of how headstock-heavy it is:

I have finalised my SRMS805 mod project.

The bass has US Bartolini Classic Bass pickups, a series/single coil (inner coils) switch, and a 4-band EMG preamp (bass, treble, two variable mids). I have also replaced the tuners with the Japanese Gotoh GB707 (same as the ones used on Prestige and Premium Ibanez basses).

It's the white wire from the volume circuit board, that goes to the output jack.

At least, that's how it was wired up, and that matches with the circuit diagrams & pics I was able to find.



You wouldn't happen to know the correct controls layout would you? The way it was setup before had the balance top/front, nearest the bridge pickup, the volume was top/rear, below the bridge; treble was bottom row, near the output jack, and bass was bottom/front.

I want to put the layout back the way it should be, and that arrangement seems odd, but if that's correct.....

I'm not as familiar with 5 strings, but i think it comes with the EQ BII and it should be like this. but since seeing what's below those pickups, if that's stock, i have some things to learn. I've never owned a 5 string soundgear, only 4 strings from that era.

Interesting how the blend for the 5-strings is in a different spot than for the 4-strings :wideyed:



I found a few posts here & other forums talking about the dummy-coils under the Lo-z j-pups. The routing underneath looks factory, to me....

Cool i want to learn more about the 5 strings. Is there an ibanez document showing the control layout for 5 strings? I would think the 4 and 5 would have the same layout.
