I love the tone of the 1405, but the hum is annoying when I want to favor one pickup. I already asked Nordstrand about building me some Big Splits for it. They said it was possible, but they can only do 17mm spacing, so the strings wouldn't line up perfectly. Thinking I might not want to go that route.

As an alternative, I'm kind of looking at the SR756 which is only $900. I could then yank the electronics myself if I wanted to. That bass isn't nearly as attractive as the 5006 to me, but it's $1400 less. I'm just wondering if I'd be happy with the fit and finish on the neck and fretwork. I also wonder if it's as durable as the finish on the Premium. I hate the durability of the SR50x basses. Those bodies are just asking to be destroyed.

Look for something like a used 3006 or 1016. Great basses and you can usually find them at a good price.

I agree the finish applied to some SRs (50X especially) is rather fragile and tends to get dinged/peels off/etc easily; but the basses are rock solid. Yes, Premiums have a more carefully executed fit & finish (and look A LOT better than the infamous "poop brown" of the 500's), but the regular SRs are well built and the 756 is - IMO - quite a looker ;) I'd love to own a 5er but they're not available in EU (dang).

Last night I was leaning toward the 5006. After a good nights sleep though, I'm leaning toward getting a 756. I actually like that burst finish and stripe through the middle. It gives the bass a little more character and a slight retro look versus the "furniture ala grandma" look of the 5006. :D

Does anyone know what the "BSF" finish means for the 756 on the Ibby website? I guess it's Something Sunburst Flat maybe? I notice the 506 is listed as "BM" which I assume means "Bowel Movement", and the 1200 and 1400's are listed as "VNF" which I assume means vintage natural flat.

Cool. Do you know if that means it has a satin poly coating on it? That's what my 1405 seems to have, though it's very light. The SR500's almost seemed to have nothing on them at all but stain, and would ding if you hit them with your fingernail. I wouldn't want that to be the case with a $900 bass. It needs to be sealed a bit I think.

It's a hard satin finish, not just a stain like on the 500s.

My fault for misusing the term flat. What I meant was knobs in middle - not cutting or boosting.

I've thrown together a few SRX sound files straight into the computer. And I used the term flat the same way on the file names - oh well.

This is nothing fancy, just plug and play so that we can see if we're hearing the same thing in these basses. The first file is neck pickup with bass and treble centered, the second has them full up. Those are the extremes so you can imagine how easy would be to tweak those sounds into something usable imho.

I tried to play a few similar licks on each file but didn't spend much time with it.

Nice sound samples you got there. I use to own an Ibanez srx595. it was a cool sounding bass.

I have tried it many times with both pickups, but don't care for that sound or close to the middle setting of the blend knob. I don't know why - guess that's my own personal quirkiness.
Love my SRX I just need to get a sunburst one. I'd be really tempted to have my white one painted with gold top and creme binding similar to a Les Paul but that would probably be expensive. Still, it's fun to imagine....

Got an RA# to send the SR1405e back today. It will be sorely missed, but highly recommended by me to others from here on out. If you want single coil tone with a bit more aggression, it's a great choice if you don't mind a bit of single coil hum.

I also placed the order on the SR756 today. It is supposed to ship tomorrow, so I'll have it be the end of the week. Very stoked to say the least!

I found an srx 5-string bass in a natural finish on musician's friend. it's an Ibanez srx355. it's no sunburst, but would that be close?
