The Spaceman Club

"Unique equal loudness filter to control the frequency response of the compression"

Sounds like the Doc Lloyd Photon. Very curious to know how the Contour control works. The description says it controls the side chain filter somehow.
Looks like it's an adjustable version of the sidechain filter that's on the Broughton Omnicomp and Effectrode LA-1A. It should work like a sidechain HPF, but not quite as simple.

Google and DuckDuckGo is your friend! That and the thegearpage. You can search the name and look at the descriptions on the search results. Nothing nefarious going on that I know of.
Haha, fair enough! I admit I didn't try, just assumed Spaceman would keep all info to themselves until takeoff. This compressor indeed looks interesting, alas side jacks are a deal breaker for me :(

I ordered. I’m hoping the adjustable contour sidechain can go to a more extreme setting than pedals with a fixed sidechain filter. That red/blue gain reduction light is also real’ purdy.
Based on the description, it sounds like this can get into "dirty comp" territory.

Can you report back once you've had time to put it through it's paces?

Repost of what I put in the compressor thread:

Spent 15mins with the Ixion. First impressions is that it's a good one. Less transparent than I was expecting, even with the treble control at noon it's doing something with the low end (in a good way). It might have something to do with the contour control, but I believe that just affects the side chain filter. High contour (which is CCW) sounds great, and enhances the low end. Flat contour seems more transparent, but I don't like the feel of playing a compressor with no side chain filter. It also has a lot of headroom, even at 9V. My bass is fairly low output (Dingwall with glockenklang preamp, active level is the same as passive) and I need to crank the threshold to full to get the gain reduction to light up at all with a high contour (flat contour is too compressed at that point though).

The colour it imparts is different than my Effectrode LA-1A. I think I prefer them both on? I suspect I'd be happy with the Ixion and a Sushi Box More (which I don't have at the moment) since it gives the same tone enhancement as the LA-1A. It might just be the new pedal smell, but first impressions is that I prefer the Ixion over the LA-1A. At least as a compressor the Ixion seems superior, even without an attack knob. Which one sounds best will take more time to decide (I suspect I'll prefer both on).

My Ixion arrived this afternoon.

Took the Ixion through its initial testing, at home, alone. It’s different. Doesn’t closely resemble any other compressor I’ve used. The dynamic processing is very transparent. I can’t really get it to sound notably squished. But it does provide that familiar gentle bounce in my fingers, that only comes from compression. The tone profile is not transparent. Lots of flavor in there. This is not a utilitarian protection device, more of a tone shaper. I look forward to auditioning it in various positions and ensembles, as I can’t predict what it’s gonna be like.

I like mine. I’ve got a LA1A and an Empress, and wanted something in between, and the Ixion fits that description somewhat. Still working on a sweet spot, as I’ve got it on a board with three new additions, but overall, I’m pleased with it. Next up will be the Equinox.

If anybody wants to try the Ixion, I have mine in the classifieds. I'll be writing a review hopefully soon but I have a couple of other compressors on the way for my shootout (Testing Compressors: Cali, Smoothie, Empress, Diamond, Keeley, FEA, Darkglass, Doc Lloyd, JHS & more) and need to clear some cash. Save a bit on buying new. Mine is mint.

I’d love to take this off your hands, Scuba, but I’m in Czech currently and not wanting to fork over an additional 20+% in VAT on top of int’l shipping. However, if you’re traveling to Europe any time soon let me know. ;)
