What's the current preferred mods to Squier Mini-Ps?

No preferred mods as everybody has different tastes but definitely replace the munchkin strap buttons if you actually want to use a strap

I find the hardware to be reliable but some users here have done extensive work to their Mini P like replacing pickups, tuners, painting the neck etc. I only fixed what needed fixing (minor fret, nut and neck work) and put Chromes on it. To me it sounds great so no need for new pickups. It has a deep vintage tone that my standard P doesn't have so they complement each other well.

When I get a new guitar I keep it stock and spend about a week setting it up and playing it. Only then can I make an informed decision about which mods/upgrades are needed and desirable. But that's just me.

For the record, you're not going to find a $20 PG for a Mini P. This is about the least expensive option, short of cutting your own.

Exactly. I bought a tort pickguard for my Bronco from that seller and it's a high quality pickguard, plus you can return it if it doesn't fit. Solid product from a solid vendor.

I spent hours reading this thread from start to finish. I started reading because for years I have been trying to get comfortable playing bass which I play ok but my fingers are very small. I started searching short scale basses and I came across this thread. After reading I ordered a black mini p bass that should be here Friday. I'm so excited to be able to play and improve without all the hand pain. I have purchased many mods for it already like 1/4 pound pickup black tuning keys black bridge strap buttons ( because I read here they were useless ) and some knobs. I hate chrome so all the chrome had to go. The only thing I need is a cream pickguard to complete my look. I'm probably going to paint the stock one. But I really want a multi ply one. Does anyone have any suggestions. I found a seller on ebay but its very pricey.

This thread has cited a couple of different options for custom pickguards - that are in the very reasonable 35 - 40 dollar range.

Congratulations! You're going to love the Mini P. It is very easy to play.

A seller on ebay theswee_33 i guess it was made at his shop for someone and they never picked it up. Its out of the USA which worked best for me since thats where I'm from.

A question for all who have replaced their pickguards so far - how is the fit and finish? I think one Reverb-sourced pickguard may have need to be resized/sanded around the pickguard, etc. For those who have purchased from Reberb, Ebay US, Ebay Asia, etc....how has the quality been overall, and of particular interest....is the fit tight around the neck pocket, are the screw holes and vol/tone holes lining up?

I purchased 2 from a dealer from Reverb. For mine, screw hole alignment and neck pocket were perfect. The outline of the pickup needed just a slight bit of sanding before it snapped down. It wasn't any big deal. I did it from underneath the pickguard, simply with a few strokes of a 3M sanding pad. Worked out perfectly.

I wish we could modify a pinned post to summarize it all. I tried it at one point, but, it is scattered across a bunch of posts, by design of the forum.

Very quickly:

- There are multiple drop-in replacements for tuners. I used Gotoh GB707 Compacts.

- I believe it was established that the pickups themselves are standard P sizes. Folks have succeeded with multiple types of replacements.

- Mojotone stocks a graphite nut that, amazingly, is a drop in replacement. You only need to do minor tweak of slots, if necessary.

Cheers for not being as lazy as me

I think the pickup and bridge are standard size.
Nut width is 1.5" so any Jazz bass replacement nut fits, for example Graph Tech Tusq and Tusq XL.
I don't know if 24mm pots fit the cavity because I haven't opened up mine.

I can ask my tech to create more room in the cavity if that's necessary. Getting EMGs in this bad boy is a must for me.

I meant the pots, not the pickups. Some people might want to replace the small pots
