Don't have a Jag but my Mini P needed some love. The back of the neck was rough, the frets were w bit sharp and dull, the pickup corners were too sharp, the nut slots too shallow, a set up. Not a big deal. It plays nice now.

Based on what I read and personally experienced with both the Jag SS and the Mini, I'd say out of box condition of the Jag is probably often a little better. But the difference is minor stuff that can be cleaned up.

Good to see you pcake. Reading this stream makes me wonder why Squier can't get consistence in setup from the factory
At this price point they simply cannot afford to do setups, drill pickguard holes straight, cut the nut to the right depth etc. They hurriedly assemble them and out of the factory they go. The more you pay the more consistence you get.
Luckily Squier gets the basics right (neck pocket, string alignment, shielding) so these instruments are totally fixable, even though they might require extensive TLC.
I don't mind having to do that on these ultra-cheap guitars, I actually welcomed the opportunity to learn some guitar tech stuff because it allowed me to work on my pricier instruments with confidence.
The question I wanna ask is why can't Fender file the fret ends on its overpriced MIM instruments and dry the necks properly, even on expensive MIAs? But that's for another thread

I'm getting a fair amount of work done on my Mini. New pickup, new tuners, new pots, the jack sucked, the initial setup wasn't good. Nothing too unexpected or unforgivable at that price point.
I'm not surprised others do a little better. For less than $200, you should expect inconsistent QC.

I went with the Nordstrand NP4A Alnico III.
I've only used it in "Madison Square Living Room" so far
thus it's a bit early to draw solid conclusions, but: It sounds better, and much more "P-like" now, than the stock pickups. I haven't specifically modified compression or EQ for it yet. There is still a somewhat hollow tone that I don't care for.The guitar tech who worked on thought it sounded great... go figure.

I cut my left index finger on Saturday, so I brought the Mini to church on Sunday. The short scale made the stretching less painful and she sounded great, too.

Really nice mods.[ As have so many people in our group have shown, the Mini has great bones (comfortable body and great neck ) that can serve as the foundation of a really great 28.6 inch neck bass. I have to com[pliment onm your amp choice as well, AMPEG Portaflex is a really great amp in all of its variations.
I wish I could claim credit for that line, but I stole it from someone else on TB. Who probably stole it from someone else.
Team Mini - From very early on in the thread, I reached out to some of the top string mfrs to see if we could get a special run of "made to fit" strings or the Mini P. I've recently followed up and think that I have at least one name brand willing to move forward. For those who have good measuring skills and/or existing custom set that you may have ordered online from one of the lesser-known custom brands, are you able to provide measurements from the ball-end of the string to the nut and from the nut to the tuning post? I'll take some measurements on my own, but just want to double-check and build a consensus. I'd like for those who are interested to have a set of strings that fit and don't require the wound portion of the string to wrap around the tuning post.
