Team Mini - From very early on in the thread, I reached out to some of the top string mfrs to see if we could get a special run of "made to fit" strings or the Mini P. I've recently followed up and think that I have at least one name brand willing to move forward. For those who have good measuring skills and/or existing custom set that you may have ordered online from one of the lesser-known custom brands, are you able to provide measurements from the ball-end of the string to the nut and from the nut to the tuning post? I'll take some measurements on my own, but just want to double-check and build a consensus. I'd like for those who are interested to have a set of strings that fit and don't require the wound portion of the string to wrap around the tuning post.

Thanks...and that works for me. Actually, the pics are better and easier to read than what I see when trying to read the measurements off of the tape measurer itself, so it's great double-check. Hang tight....hope to have good news to share soon. Appreciate the help!

Thank you for taking on the task to try to get string manufacturers to give us a better assortmen t of strings.
It would be nice to see nylon tape and flat wound strings as well as round wounds. At least on my Mini, the pickups have enough sensitivity to handle flat round and nylon tape strings. If you can find us a source for these strrings, all of our fingerfs will thank you (I pla

If you are able to secure this, I'll put them on my list of preferred string vendors. Not for these basses (I'm a lurker, not an owner) but just because I like the idea of a string maker responding to direct requests from customers.

Did they say that they are willing to make flatwounds ?

And are they offering custom gauge choices ?

Or, are they at least offering to do a custom wrap length in all of the same gauges which they already make in long scale flats ?

That ought to yield between two and three choices for each string's gauge.

OK....so, if the string manufacturer makes a wound length of 31", with the silk starting after and being the only part to wrap around the string post, does that get us where we need to be? Based on the measurements, my initial reaction is that it does. But, there are a lot of folks here who have more than one sub short scale and who probably know more about strings than I do (I don't change regularly, so for those of you who put a new set on for every gig....).

Let me know your thoughts. Just want to make sure we build a consensus and get a much good info upfront as we can. Does a 31" wound string get us what we need?

it's just over 30" on my mini from saddle to E string peg. btw, it's 28.7" from nut to saddle.

btw, newtone strings will make any length of round wound strings at any gauge. they made the set my 24.75" scale bass is wearing.

Yes, based upon those detailed pics from pistonrod8, 31" of wrap would work for a Squier Mini-P [though I do not own one].

If we also wish the string spec to cover other mainstream basses with 28.6" scale length, we should have someone go and measure an Ibanez Mikro and a Jackson Minion for comparison.

I think that they would be OK though, but it only would take a moment if someone here owns one or the other of those, as I too do not own either model.

My own shortest scale basses are 30", so this issue does not affect me.

Here's my full size Jazz and where the silks end.

You can see it's very close to the post. I think anywhere between 31" and 31-1/4" would work fine.

Perfect. I think we may have some options sooner rather than later from a few major brands...possibly rounds and flats. I'll keep everyone posted, and thanks for everyone who has helped.

Yes and no. I believe that MFR #1, while they think they have the specs correct, actually have a Mini on order (backordered....they wanted a red one) just to make sure. I'd say that's going above and beyond. But then again, the Mini is best bass you can get for $180, and that doesn't even reflect how great they sound and how fun it is. So...good progress there. Mfr #2, who also expressed an interest in doing strings for sub short scales basses, is not currently doing bass strings in their manufacturing process. One thinks they'll do flats, one things they'll do rounds, but we'll have to see. I'd like to support both mfrs if they go through with it, and I hope that the TB community and folks here will do the same. So....nothing to show yet, but I'd say that that's progress, right?!?!

Well, my experience with Stringjoy has been positive. I'm guessing you may have contacted Scott already?
I love their strings on my 35" 5-string and 34" 8-string basses.

First timer in this thread here. I saw one of these in my local GC today, and was taken aback by the tuning keys. I've always wanted clover shaped knobs to go on gotoh-style mini keys, and these have them! Has anyone tried putting them on any other tuners? Honestly I have a couple basses I'd love to swap the generic Y buttons for something like these. Very cool.

Been a while since my last gold anodized pickguard update...We left off with my machine shop using material too thick to comfortably play. He finally had a opportunity to make me two plates at the right thickness. It isn't going to be cost effective for me to ship them to San Antonio, have them dipped, and sent back.

I've decided to buy the materials and equipment to do the anodizing myself. This will allow me to buy different colors and accommodate you guy's and gal's preferences. I'll start gathering what I need over the next few weeks and begin some trial runs as soon as I am able. Stay tuned...
