So I'm looking for black nylon tapewound strings (no flats, no rounds, no other colours), and from what I can see the only real options on the list above are as follows:

- D'Addario ETB92S, 50-105, 32" (above it says 32.25", but D'Addario's website says "up to 32 inches")
ETB92S Tapewound | Bass Guitar Strings | D'Addario

- Rotosound Tru Bass 88, 65-115, 30" (above it says 32", but Rotosound's website says 30 inches.)
Tru Bass 88 Nylon Tapewound Short | 65-115 • Rotosound Music Strings

- LaBella Black Nylon Tape, 50-105, 32.25"
- LaBella Black Nylon Tape, 60-115, 32.25"

I'm installing the Hipshot Kickass bridge, so that should give my a little bit of extra length. And according to the video I posted recently (quoted above), the Rotosound should just about fit. However, they are the hardest to find.

I can get the D'Addario strings on Amazon, so that's not a problem, but does anyone know if they will really be too long? Their site does say "up to 32 inches" so in theory they might be OK?

I assume the LaBella strings are also too long, since they are the longest listed, and they did that special run recently, which would also indicate they are too long. But that special run was for flatwound, right? So would tapewound be different?

Basically, does anyone have experience with any of these four strings on the Mini P bass?

Thanks!

I have bespoke / custom made Pyramid Tapewound strings - there not as smooth as the D'Addario ETB92S which I’ve had on a Mustang.

When firstly looking to put D'Addario ETB92S on the Mini P this is the reply that came from a bass player in D'Addario customer service …

“…. if you don’t mind a small amount of wrap going around the E post you should be ok – thye do have a potential of tearing when the full diameter of the string goes around the post all the way, but if you want to not have to buy a mixmatched set, I think the short scale set should be fine because all the other strings you’d definitely be clear on including the G. You’re about a half inch early on just the E.”

Rotasound responded to me with -

“Thanks for your email and interest in our products but regret we do not.

30 inch is our shortest which would be unsuitable for your bass.

Sorry to disappoint,

Warm regards,

John (General Manager)”

There is also Galli Strings in Italy who manufacture G77-4 Bass 4 strings short scale black nylon tapes - I didn’t ‘reach out’ to Galli as I had not discovered them when I ordered from Pyramid.

Informal Poll : If you could buy the same brand and model of strings for the same price and delivery time, one set which wraps around the post of the E tuner [of ANY bass], and the other which does not, which would you choose ?

I don't know what Jamerson would do, but for me, the choice is obvious. :D ;)
~
I like how the custom LaBellas that some from this site purchased fit so that the narrower part of the string is what wraps around the post. To me, it's an aesthetic thing. If they can be talked into making another run of those strings, I'd like to get some.

IIRC, LaBella made 40 sets of those.

We need to nudge mayhaps 20 of those buyers to post reviews here about what they thought of the strings.

Then point LaBella to the reviews.

After reading them, they might do another run, if the reaction was sufficiently positive.

And based upon the same feedback, possibly they might also choose to do a custom Mini-P run of another gauge of DT flats or some nylons.

Nudge, nudge, wink, wink.... :D ;)

I have only used rounds on my Mini.
I either use:
D'Addario EXL170S Nickel Wound Bass Guitar Strings, Light, 45-100, Short Scale
or

D'Addario EPS170S ProSteel Bass Guitar Strings, Light, 45-100, Short Scale

Never an issue with length since they have no wrap on them. ;)

Would prefer nylon wound or rounds myself. I already have a short scale P-bass with flats.

So those of you who purchased the LaBellas, post your reviews and let's see if we can show them that it's a good idea to make more!
:D

being a fan of flexible strings, i'd love to see a set of la bella rounds myself.
~
Being a loudly self-proclaimed fan of choice, I'd like to see LaBella [and all other major string makers, for that matter] make some sets of all 3 types of wrap of bass string in this extra short scale.

And I do not yet even HAVE a 28.5" scale bass happening !

I do now however have a neck of that scale from one of Solo's kits, which will likely find its way onto the body of one of my 30" scale basses sometime this year, if I can make it fit, and as I have mentioned earlier in at least a couple of club threads here, it will likely require some machining at the neck pocket, of the neck and/or the candidate body, due to width variances in that area.

Oh, and HAPPY NEW YEAR to y'all ! :woot:

Hopefully those of us who wish to gig will get more bookings for 2022.

Thanks for the detailed response!

I decided to give the Rotosound RS88S Black Nylon strings a shot. Got them for exactly $45 CAD ($34.26 USD) shipped, albeit on backorder, from Strings By Mail. That's $23 less than the cheapest I found in Canada, which are also backordered.

I think the Hipshot Bridge should give that little bit of extra length to keep the E string from wrapping around the post. Worst case scenario, I can add a little extension to the bridge to pull the E string even further back.

The Pyramid strings just seem like too much hassle, and would take too long. They'd also likely cost at least double what I paid for the Rotosound.

I also ordered D'Addario set from Amazon, but I will likely send them back right away, as I prefer the sound of the Rotosound strings (based on YouTube vids).

Yes, I totally agree the price of strings once you add tax and transport becomes somewhat off putting.

Boys and Girls, I messaged the Reverb Guy who makes Mini P pick guards for easy shipping in the states…. He said he added some to his inventory. Search reverb for Sqiurr Mini P pick guard.

Have Black P…. Now need to decide what color…. Maybe I should take everything off the bass and wrap it with some funky color too?

Have you ordered from him in the past? Was his 'guard for the Mini a perfect fit or did it need tweaking and reshaping?

The first run was a great success and sold out relatively quickly. I may need to touch base with them in January or after whatever NAMM even happens (or doesn't) the year to see if we can get a run of round wounds going as well. It was discussed when we kicked off the special run in the summer.

I found it privately on Kijiji.

Mint unplayed AFAICT, and as I was told by the seller, who also said that he had used the body in another project, no details offered.

It had mounting screw holes for tuners predrilled, but no markings from them having been mounted, so I'll have to likely buy some tuners for it as well, or rob some off one of my other spare basses.

That's a very aggressive price !

Usually nylon covered cost more than regular flats, in general.

IIRC, I had that set on my 2nd bass, a short scale National, back in 1970 or so.

They cost more here, but the page says 'in stock' :

Rotosound RS88S Short Scale 88 Black Nylon Tru Bass Strings Standard 65-115

They just finished a 10% off sitewide sale though.

Also IIRC, I have bought all of my LaBella sets so far from them, and other strings, such as GHS Brite Flats, from SBM.

Both seem to be decent companies.

I don't mind waiting a bit, as I'm still waiting for hardware upgrades to arrive, as well.

An added bonus of the Rotosound tapewounds is that the black strings with yellow silk should be a decent match for my black Mini P with gold hardware.
